Indonesian manga publisher Elex Media announced this week that Miuchi Suzue's Topeng Kaca (Glass no Kamen) has been approved for reprint. The news stands (not newsstands) to put readers who have long been searching for the now out of print early volumes of the ongoing shoujo classic out of their misery.

Elex plans to reincarnate Topeng Kaca in bunkoban, which means different covers and thicker and fewer volumes that would each retail for more than the IDR 15,000 tankoubon standard. (For instance, Elex imprint Level Comics' Genius Family Company's bunko which carries a suggested retail price of IDR 28,000 each.)

As of this post's publication, the reprint project has already entered production (re-editing) phase. A speedy Japanese approval of the re-edited material willing, Elex intends to publish the Topeng Kaca bunko starting this 2010.

For readers who have come into manga fairly recently and may not be acquainted with this shoujo best-seller (50 million copies in 2006), Glass no Kamen follows actress Kitajima Maya in her quest to hone her craft. Below is Wikipedia's synopsis:

Glass Mask is a saga depicting the devotion of Maya Kitajima to the performing arts as a professional stage actress, and her competition with her skilled rival, Ayumi Himekawa. They are both pursuing the degree of acting proficiency and career success required to play the lead role of the legendary stage play "The Crimson Goddess" ("Kurenai Tennyo"). Maya is not particularly beautiful or smart in school, but her passion for acting is all-consuming, to the point where she literally puts her own life on the line several times for the sake of a role. Always told by her mother that she was good for nothing, Maya wants to prove to the world and to herself that she has worth. On the other hand, everyone expects the gifted and multi-talented Ayumi to succeed, so she is determined to reach the top on her own without the help of her prestigious parents. Wikipedia

Wikipedia also explains the genesis of the manga title:

The title refers poetically to the mask of faces that actors wear - while expressing emotions that are not their own, the mask they wear (their acting) is as fragile as glass. If the actors are distracted, their mask will “break” and show on stage the actors' true feelings.

Glass no Kamen has been adapted into anime (2xTV series and OVA) and live-action drama. Albeit still ongoing (44 volumes released as per 2009.08; 24 bunkoban by 2010.01), the series is expected to end soon, says the manga-ka. The Indonesian publication is up to volume 43 (Topeng Kaca: Bidadari Merah (Glass Mask: The Crimson Angel) volume 10).

Topeng Kaca is one of many titles requested for re-release. One (if not the biggest) barrier to republishing older series in Indonesia, according to Elex, is the reluctance of some Japanese publishing houses to have their manga reprinted in jurisdictions where piracy remains rife.

I personally welcome this news, having never read Topeng Kaca. My happiness would be complete if Elex were to also reprint Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura.

DIT Design Show Postcards

This month, DIT students studying Vis Com, Interior Design and Product Design have decided to use our postcard racks to promote their up coming design show. Each student printed between 100 and 400 postcards using their own design to promote the exhibition which resulted in 34 different cards! The cards will be distributed in our city centre venues and each rack will have a different student's design in it! If you are interested in doing some thing similar get in touch.

The show itself is on 8-12th June in The Complex in the Smithfield Plaza. Going by the standard of the postcard designs the exhibition will definitely be worth a visit!

Pandora Hearts 9, Wild Life 4, Kekkaishi 3 (Elex Media 5 May 2010 manga)

Also: Hyde & Closer 2, Spiral: The Bonds of Reason 2, and the conclusion to Treasure Gaust (volume 6). Sadly, The Fifth Columnist finale is excluded from this release.

May contain [SPOILERS]

In Pandora Hearts volume 9, Oz et al depart for Sabrie to unearth the truth Pandora has hidden there, only to encounter Eliot Nightray and Reo. What's more, Oz, trapped in an illusion, comes face to face with the architect of the Tragedy of Sabrie, Glen Baskerville!

k, that takes care of this Elex release's most popular manga. As for DO WANT! Numbers 2 and 3 —

Wild Life 4 by Fujisaki Masato

Perfect-pitched doofus veterinarian Iwashiro Tessho keeps getting monkey on your back-duped by R.E.D. Section 2 boss Ryoto Tsukasa who loves ditching work. Despite this, the enthusiasm of the Blond Haired #1 Idiot Vet in Japan to preserve the local fauna refuses to wane, not even when the latest patients to come in for “consultation” are a panda, a hippopotamus, a snake, and an elephant!

(I can't stop the goony grin on my face upon contemplation of that upcoming hippo in Wild Life volume 4. *goony grin*)

Kekkaishi 3 by Tanabe Yellow

Neither of our magical barrier masters Yoshimori and Tokine is willing to give in over who's the better kekkaishi, the rivalry stretching back to when they were kids. We get a look-see into their normal days, rather, nights of Ketsu! Metsu! Tenketsu! practice and what-not in Kekkaishi volume 3. Meanwhile, someone from the past comes calling on Yoshimori's (hilarious) demon dog. Someone who offers Madarao... (Cue suspenseful music here.)

NEW TITLES: Artist Acro, Caramel Boy, and Otoboke Section Chief

Three shiny new series kick off a new month: Artist Acro, the Shonen Sunday serial by Sakurai Ato, starring a hero improbably named Acro Hamburger; Caramel Boy, the latest shoujo romance by Morio Masami (The Extra Kobayashi and Love Chop! manga-ka) that bypasses HanaLaLa serialization and heads straight for tankou; and the seinen Otoboke Section Chief or Otoboke Kachou by Bungeishunjū Manga Awardee Ueda Masashi, creator of Kobo-chan.

The Artist Acro and Otoboke Section Chief blurbs (as well as those for Crows 7, Katsu! 3, and Raiders 4) have been tucked below the manga list line to throw the spotlight on Caramel Boy's debut, seeing as how it's only one of two shoujo titles in this very-shounen release.

きゃらめるBOY 1

Caramel Boy © Morio Masami/
Hakusensha (LaLa)

Caramel Boy 1 by Morio Masami

Motoka has lived next door to Shun, the “CaramelBoy” who once starred in an absurdly popular candy ad, since they were kids. Familiarity with Shun has made Motoka oblivious to the Caramel Boy's charms; she only allows that Shun has gotten taller and perhaps (strictly objectively speaking!), more attractive. But middle schooler Shun has changed in ways beyond what the clueless Motoka realizes. These days, he's more likely to affect a cynical attitude (complete with sneers and taunts) towards Motoka.

Don't tell me it's because Shun actually likes Motoka!?

MANGAZINES: Shonen Magz 71, featuring Ghost Doctor

Shonen Magz 71 - Ghost Doctor front cover

Youkai no Oisha-san
© Satou Yuuki/Kodansha

Word is that Elex is shopping for titles to promote Shonen Magz to a bi-monthly publication. I don't know how near that prospect is, but for now Shonen Magz 71 is the first of the monthly mangazine quad to ship in May, and the featured series is Satou Yuuki-sensei's Youkai have doctors? Ghost Doctor. I don't exactly know what Kuro and Kotoko are up to in the latest Youkai no Oisha-san; the newest Komikologi forgot to swap the Code:Breaker blurb from April.

Other Kodansha shounen (and seinen) titles in serialization: BECK by Harold Sakuishi · Code:Breaker by Kamijyo Akimine · Fairy Tail by Mashima Hiro · Kindaichi Case Files by Amagi Seimaru & Sato Fumiya · Kungfu Boy Legends (Tekken Chinmi Legends) by Maekawa Takeshi · Sanzoku Ou by Sawada Hirofumi · School Rumble by Kobayashi Jin · Tokkyu!! by Komori Yoichi, Kubo Mitsurou · Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE by CLAMP · Vinland Saga by Yukimura Makoto.

If my squint mode »ON! wasn't a spectacular #Fail, Tribal 12 by Osada Yu-Ko doesn't appear in ShoMagz 71's cover line-up. Any idea why? Has the series wrapped?

Previews continued...

Artist Acro 1

アーティストアクロ 」 by Sakurai Ato

In this world, “artists” possess that special ability to fascinate others, and once they could use their skills without restraint. So much so that seven years ago, a group of artists started using souls for raw material. Into this menacing state of affairs comes our hero (Acro Hamburger, as already noted) who has the power to transform anything he touches into clay. The spunky country boy migrates to the art capital to hone his sculpting, only to find the city cloaked in darkness and fear... [With additions from Wikipedia's Artist Acro stub]

Otoboke Section Chief 1

Otoboke Kachouおとぼけ課長 」 by Ueda Masashi

Otoboke Kachou is another 4-koma offering from Ueda Masashi-sensei. It began serialization in Manga Time in 1981 and continues till this day. The series follows the comical trials and tribs of the titular, simultaneously pompous and klutzy section chief Otoboke. Elex highlights that this gag comic strip actually reflects our own lives, and invites us to shrug off the daily stresses by LMAO'ing to our hearts' content (using this manga, of course, as catalyst).

Crows 7

クローズ 」 by Takahashi Hiroshi

The Kuro-Taki alliance having fallen apart, Bull attacks the Kyokuryu lair alone. This stumps Takiya's boys, already bewildered and edgy. They try to recoup their strength, but apparently Bull's not the only fighter. Reinforcements arrive JIT. One problem solved, another appears in the form of a sinister pair looking for Suzuran's strongest.

Why are these two strangers hunting down Rindaman?

Katsu! 3

KATSU! 」 by Adachi Mitsuru

Kimoto dan Mizutani revise their deal. If Mizutani beats him, Kimoto will quit boxing. Obviously wanting to win, Mizutani asks Satoyama's father for training. Will training under an ex-boxer be enough to secure Mizutani's victory?

Raiders 4

레이더스 」 by Park JinJun

The dagger Ariel grabbed turns out to be a compass. Learning this, Lamia filches the compass and abandons the group. Meanwhile, Ian's congregation pursues the founding of a new religion.

IMJ and Guinness Rugby Area 22

This months IMJ has short report on our recent Guinness Bar 22 iphone App in pub activity. If you haven't seen the article it is reproduced below.

Romeo × Juliet anime premieres 28 April 2010 on Animax Asia (That's tonight)

Airs every Wednesday at 7PM WIB (UTC+07)

Romeo × Juliet anime ex Animax Asia

© 2007 GONZO/CBC•GDH•SPWT

Airtime is UTC+07; Add one hour for Southeast Asia and Philippine times.

Gonzo's loose (very  l—o—o—s—e) anime take on William Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers trope christener Romeo and Juliet premieres on Animax Asia this 28 April 2010, Wednesday, 7PM WIB. Two Romeo × Juliet episodes will air back to back.

I doubt you don't know this already, but just in case — blurb:

...a new re-imagination of Shakespeare's classic that sets the doomed love of Romeo and Juliet, heirs to rival houses Montague and Capulet, against the fantasy world of Neo Verona with a dramatically charged political background. [Animax's synopsis]

As TV Tropes sez, it's better than it sounds. I actually found myself enjoying Oizaki Fumitoshi's series directorial debut so much that [SPOILAGE] (click at your peril)

I wished the requisite downer ending had been subverted.

Twenty-four Romeo × Juliet episodes aired in Japan from April through September 2007. The chief screenwriter for the series was Yoshida Reiko. Seiyuu Mizushima Takahiro and Mizusawa Fumie were originally cast as our star-crossed lovers, but from the promo plugs I've seen, I think Animax's version will be dubbed into English. Lena Park sang the opening theme Inori ~You Raise Me Up~; 12012 performed Cyclone, the first ending theme (eps 1-14), with Mizrock's Good bye, yesterday as the ED for episodes 15 to 23. Inori~You Raise Me Up〜 (English version) was used as the ending theme for the series finale.

Encore telecasts of episodes 1 - Two People ~When They Met and 2 - Promise ~The Fragrance of Memory will be at 11PM tonight and 730AM and 11AM tomorrow, in case you miss the 7PM premiere.

~niki DBA huamulan03 (花木蘭03) via Animax Asia

P.S. There's a Romeo × Juliet manga adaptation, too, serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Asuka.

Little does Ichigo know that Aizen would soon be dispatching two human-like Arrancar—Yammy and Ulquiorra—to Karakura chou. Chad and Orihime are the first to encounter Aizen's advance hollow party; they attempt to stop the pair of killing machines, but...

Kyaaa~! Ulquiorra-sama! ♡ It took you long enough to get here! Rather, it took m&c! *looks at m&c! askance* that long to bring you and Bleach 22: Conquistadores to this fangirl. Anyway, I hope you like it here. *angelic beam*

Goong [Palace Story] 19 by Park SoHee

Shin x ChaeKyeong continue to break my heart, despite MiRu scheming to reunite our OTP so that she gets Yul in Goong volume 19. This is prolly because HyoRin will do anything to marry Shin. Someone stop her!

NEW TITLES

We have Shanaou Yoshitsune Genpei War (Shanaou Yoshitsune: Genpei no Kassen), the follow-up to Sawada Hirofumi's award-winning shounen samurai tale Shanaou Yoshitsune; another new Long Hu Men side story, Tony Wong and Dick Kwong's The Story of Wang Fenglei (try to make out the original Indonesian blurb [with squint mode » ON!] here); and three new shoujo series—C-blossom -case 729- by Shimotsuki Kayoko & Fukui Harutoshi, Tokyo Angels by Fujii Mihona, and My Fragile Love, Miyawaki Yukino's Usotsuki na Gemini, on a triple launch.

Shanaou Yoshitsune Genpei War 1 by Sawada Hirofumi

Jishou Year 4 (1180 AD). Genji, incensed by Heishi tyranny, goes into action in various parts of Japan. This as an envoy arrives in Hiraizumi, forever changing the life of young samurai Hyota, now grown strong. Minamoto no Yoshitsune, it's time for your appearance on this historical stage!

C-blossom -case 729- volume 1 by Shimotsuki Kayoko & Fukui Harutoshi

C-blossom -case 729- volume 1 (m&c!)

To avoid public censure after her father's arrest on corruption charges, Matsumiya Kana transfers to an exclusive girls' boarding school. At a time when the friendless Kana nearly loses all hope, into her life comes the handsome teacher Kisaragi Kou. But who is Kisaragi Kou, really? And why is there a group out to kill Kana?

Scanlator Condensation (via Baka-Updates Manga) invites you to give this two-volume series a whirl with this welcome mat: Welcome to C-blossom -case729- a series with action, intrigue, and well... a plot.

(For me, the lure was: Megane bishounen. And yes, that alludes to Kisaragi Kou.)

Tokyo Angels 1 by Fujii Mihona

Tough Mei, cooking-proficient Mai, and gentle Yui. This angelic trio has vowed to protect Tokyo from the menace of drugs.

It's been awhile (a  l—o—n—g while) since Fujii Mihona-sensei's GALS first came out in Indonesia; I hope Mei is a worthy successor to Kotobuki Ran.

My Fragile Love 1 by Miyawaki Yukino

Losing my memory has made me realize what being alone means. But Rin has promised to make new memories with me. Memories between twins.

This is the heroine Aoi talking after she was hospitalized and lost her memory. She is supposed to be very close to her twin, Rin, or so says Shoujo Crusade (excerpted by Baka-Updates Manga).

You can find the My Fragile Love volume 2 and 3   [SPOILAGE], as well as volume previews of Born to Cook 6, White Paper Ark 5, and Garudayana 2, after the manga list.

BESTSELLER REISSUES: Shanaou Yoshitsune 7-12 Box Set

Shanaou Yoshitsune 7-12 (m&c!)

Shanaou Yoshitsune volumes 7-12 release alongside the Genpei War premiere. Like the initial package deal, this box set of Sawada Hirofumi-sensei's Kodansha Manga award winner for best shounen manga likewise retails for IDR 89,000.

MANGAZINES: Cherry 42

Cherry 42 (m&c!)

Issue 42 of Cherry, m&c!'s (not always) monthly anthology of Shogakukan shoujo (and sometimes, josei) titles, mainly from Sho-Comi, ChuChu, and Ciao, also releases this Wednesday. One of the titles installing in this mangazine, Nishimura Tomoko's school life comedy, My Lovely Class Leader, actually has an anime adaptation. You might know it better as Gokujou!! Mecha Mote Iinchou.
