LeMasurier-Webster wedding

When I first heard a train and canoes were involved in their plans, I knew I was in for a fun wedding in Thetford, Vt., last weekend. Since there was no place to park at their home on the Connecticut River, the couple asked the White River Flyer to pick up their guests as part of the train's regular route. After that, the the wedding party paddled up river to the ceremony. A hot time was had by all! More photos can be seen on my Facebook page, or in the Prints section of my Web site.

Vampire Knight 2, Claymore 15, Topeng Kaca Bidadari Merah 11* (Elex Media 4 August 2010 manga)

*Topeng Kaca: Bidadari Merah (Glass Mask: The Crimson Angel) #11—volume 44 of Miuchi Suzue's Glass no Kamen shoujo classic—comes with a caveat: It will only release on the 4th if original publisher Hakusensha greenlights Elex's cover in time.

So before I blurb the still veiled TK:BM 11 —

Contains [SPOILERS!]

Yuki learns that My Hero Zero's vampire rank—Level E—is the lowest you can go as a bloodsucker, an unenviable position that invites slaying—STAT!—by the Purebloods. But as Zero's blood lust worsens and time grows short, Yuki commits the most unpardonable crime — letting Zero feast on her.

How will vampire aristocrat and Yuki's overprotective guardian Kaname react to his charge's Unforgivable! felony? Find out in volume 2 of Death Note-apple-filching-Twilight's-got-nothing-on-it Vampire Knight, shipping next Wednesday.

Serial Topeng Kaca: Bidadari Merah 11 of 11+ by Miuchi Suzue

Actress Kitajima Maya struggles to hone her craft in hopes of winning the Crimson Angel/Kurenai Tennyo role of a lifetime from rival Himekawa Ayumi, already lauded by the press for her Akoya portrayal (forgive misinterps; I've yet to read this series):

Mayuko-sensei leaves the Valley of the Plums to watch Maya and Ayumi separately rehearsing the role of Akoya. When practice ends, she calls each thespian Akoya and offers each a glass of water. From how they accept the glass, Mayuko-sensei confirms the true Kurenai Tennyo.

[Additions from h1kar1-san's summaries of Glass Mask 43-44 gratefully acknowledged.]

If you've seen Komikologi August, you already know that the Topeng Kaca bunko rerelease—Topeng Kaca Deluxe—is upcoming.

Speaking of upcomings, Yagi Norihiro's Claymore 15 ditches that “stigma” it's been wearing since March and finally streets on the 4th.

Claymore 15 of 18+ by Yagi Norihiro

Pursuing the treacherous Galatea, Clarice and Miata reach the holy city of Labona, under attack from Awakened Being Agatha. Soldiers scramble to mount a defense, but to no avail. Just as defeat appears inevitable, Claire and six of her warrior allies arrive.

Blurbs for other continuing series shunted below the fake cut.

(VIZ in its Claymore 15 description has this to add: In the aftermath, Miria decides to finally share her shocking discoveries about the true nature of the Yoma, of the Organization and of the Claymores themselves.)

Other 4 August 2010 highlights

Series conclusions: Seta Haruhi's Coz We're not Children wraps with volume 2: Suzuna Otohime who professes to hate Idol Superstar Kiritani Yuga hears of the scandal involving his parents. Instead of escalating her dislike, the news only makes Otohime want to protect Yuga — especially when she learns he has a high fever. Does this mean Otohime doesn't really hate Yuga?

    Adaptations
At least three Glass no Kamen anime adaptations have been produced. The first by Eiken spanned 23 episodes, airing between April and September 1984 on Japan's NTV. Seiyuu Katsuki Masako voiced Kitajima Maya, with Matsushima Minori as Maya's rival Himekawa Ayumi, Nakanishi Taeko as Maya's mentor Tsukikage Chigusa and Nozawa Nachi as businessman Hayami Masumi.

TMS Entertainment produced the next anime, a three-episode OAV Garasu no Kamen: Sen no Kamen wo Motsu Shōjo (Glass Mask: The Girl Who Wears A Thousand Masks), released December 1998. The OAV retelling of the first three manga arcs featured a different voice cast: Ogata Megumi as Maya, Matsui Naoko as Ayumi, Toda Keiko as Tsukikage and Kosugi Juurouta as Hayami.

TMS remade the series in 2005, this time casting Kobayashi Sanae, Yajima Akiko, Fujita Toshiko and Morikawa Toshiyuki as Maya, Ayumi, Tsukikage and Hayami, with the 1984 anime Maya returning as Ayumi's mother, Himekawa Utako. Fifty-one episodes aired between April 2005 and March 2006 on TV Tokyo.

The live-action version adapting the first 38 manga volumes ran for two seasons on TV Asahi (Season 1: July to September 1997, 11 episodes; Season 2: April to June 1998, 12 episodes), with the Season 1 episode 12 airing on 30 September 1999 (thus becoming known as the Special Ending). The TV drama Seasons 1-2 cast comprised Adachi Yumi as Maya, Matsumoto Megumi as Ayumi, Nogiwa Yoko as Tsukikage and Tanabe Seiichi as Hayami. All reprised their roles for the Special Ending except Ayumi's actor (replaced by Nakamura Aimi).

The anime spanned manga chapters 1 through 46.

Two drama CDs preceded the anime. The first was Track 2 of the LaLa Kirameki Drama CD, produced for LaLa's 29th anniversary and given away as a freebie with the magazine's September 2005 issue. (The furoku CD also contained dramas for four other LaLa serials: Tsukuba Sakura's Penguin Kakumei (Track 3), Nakaji Yuki's ZIG☆ZAG (Track 4), Tanaka Meca's Sailor Fuku ni Onegai! (Track 5), and Hatori Bisco's Ouran Koukou Host Club (Track 6)). The second Vampire Knight Midnight CD-Pack (LaLa Oubosa Zenin Service CD Vampire Knight (Midnight CD Pack)) was exclusively released for mail order in 2006.

The drama CDs feature the same cast as the anime's, with the exception of characters Headmaster Cross Kaien (Koyasu Takehito in the drama; VK anime sound director Gôda Hozumi in the anime), Hio Shizuka (Sonoda Keiko in the drama; Orikasa Fumiko in the anime) and Sayori Wakaba (Ueda Kana in the drama; Mizuno Risa in the anime).

Following up the m&c! 30% discount advisory with this latest news: You get -20% off when you purchase Bleach 1-10 at all Gramedia bookstores until 17 August 2010.

Still waiting for m&c! to revert to me on questions this advisory raises:

  1. Do you get the 20% discount if you buy individual volumes, or do you have to get all 10 manga to avail of the 20% off?
  2. Has the promo already started?
  3. Does the discount cover just Jakarta or does that seluruh Gramedia BookStore extend nationwide¹?

¹ In addition, someone commented at m&c!'s fesbuk that the discount scheme also includes Trimedia Bookstore Pakuwon Surabaya.

I haven't been to Gramed yet, but if you have and can answer these questions, please be kind enough to share with us? Sankyuu~

Paperwork

Renewing the passport and other administrative tasks:

Today is another scorcher outside, so I've been clearing up the piles of paperwork on my desk. One item was the renewal of my passport. It doesn't expire until Feb. 2011, but I won't be traveling internationally before then, so this is a good time to send it off. Never has getting a photo EXACTLY the right size been so difficult. 2"x2" overall size, with the distance from the tip of my chin to the top of my head (including hair) to be not less than 1" and not more than 1 3/8". I think I finally got one to be close enough.

A year ago today I was on my way to Maui for a week. I was avoiding spending my birthday at home, alone. It was a beautiful and exciting distraction, but this year I am staying home and taking in some local events - laser show and a baseball game for instance. It's just a date, right?

"Waiter!! Another martini, please."

Ah Dear Banchou 5, Bleach 30, Shanaou Yoshitsune Genpei War 4 (m&c! 28 July 2010 manga) [UPDATED]

m&c! covers and previews (confirming the new titles) will go up on or after 28 July. »Done

Ah, Dear Banchou! 5 (m&c!)

Ah! Itoshi no Banchousama © Fujikata Mayu/Hakusensha (Serialized in LaLa DX)
Published in Indonesia as Ah, Dear Banchou! by PT Gramedia/m&c!

You realize, don't you, that if m&c! comes out with only Ah, Dear Banchou! volume 5 in 2010, the Gramed imprint would've released just over one tankou annually for three years? (1.33, to be precise: volume 4 was published in April 2009 and the third and second tankou were issued in November and May 2008.)

That Fujikata Mayu's She's banchou to over two thousand male students — through no fault of her own! reverse harem shoujo manga releases so s—l—o—w—l—y owes everything to serialization in LaLa DX, the Hakusensha anthology following a peculiar bi-monthly on the tenth of odd-numbered months schedule. My only beef is that because of its leisurely My (or rather LaLa DX's) Pace, I've forgotten who's the guy on the cover. Definitely NOT Yuu-chan, so... Shun-shun?

nik's “public” service
To save you from more grief, telling you now that Akizuki Sorata's Akagami no Shirayukihime—released here as Red Haired Snow White—also belongs to the LaLa DX club.

In any case, Yuu-chan, or rather, Katou-kun, has trouble suppressing his feelings for Souka-banchou in Ah! Itoshi no Banchousama 5. So much so that Souka's Bodyguard #1 transfers to a rival school! Katou's move throws Souka's inner circle at Tokugawa Vocation School into a mother of a tizzy, leading to a ... bloody showdown?!

Speaking of showdowns —

Bleach 30: There Is No Heart Without You by Kubo Tite

Chad finally puts away Afrrancar Gantenbainne Mosqueda with his Brazo Izquierda del Diablo, only to have a similar knock-out fate visited upon him by Quinto Espada Nnoitora Jiruga. Meanwhile, Rukia comes face to face with the past: her deceased squad lieutenant, Shiba Kaien, now absorbed into Noveno Espada Aaroniero Arruruerie, appears before her. Encountering her former mentor so shocks Rukia that she...

Chad and Rukia aren't the only Bleach All Stars fighting Espada. Renji, too, has the bad luck of running into 8th-ranked Szayelaporro Grantz, the scientist Arrancar who could give the equally mad 12th Division captain Mayuri lessons in torturing lab rats.

As for Ichigo? He's currently busy with Ulquiorra-sama.

NEW TITLES: 3 × shoujo

These series debut before month's end: Because I Love You from Akira Shouko, You Can't Disappear From Me by Aikawa Saki and Tell Me One Million Times by Obayashi Miyuki.

Because I Love You IS Akira Shouko's Datte Aishiteru. The two-volumed school life series pivots around an It's complicated axis, with Nao, Rin, Michiyo and Kouta's romantic tangles taking center stage. I'm not yet sold on the Betsucomi serial as a GET!, despite issuing from the manga-ka of Saruyama!.

You Can't Disappear From Me 1 (m&c!)

Boku kara Kimi ga Kienai
© Aikawa Saki/Shogakukan
(Serialized in Sho-Comi)
Published in Indonesia as
You Can't Disappear From Me

You Can't Disappear From Me m&c!-magicked into Boku kara Kimi ga Kienai, thus consolidating its DO WANT! position. See, I lurved the one tankou My Prince, so I'm totally drooling over this yummy four-volumer doing the rabu triangle math, sides comprising school girl Hotaru, the teacher with whom she's besotted and Kousuke, the (Love Makes You Evil) jerk who resembles her much-wubbed Teach. (I'm hoping—pwease, pwease!— that it's the latter who “murders the hypotenuse” and is the title's You Can't Disappear From Me spokesperson.) m&c! adds that the reason for the similarity is genetic: Kousuke is Sensei's younger brother.

Tell Me One Million Times by Obayashi Miyuki is Hyakumankai Kikasete yo, a relatively unknown (outside Japan) short series from the creator of Jun X Ai Sensation. Our Tell Me One Million Times insistent heroine is Suguri who lives with mom and an adowable black cat (unimaginatively) named Tom. She is flustered to learn that Subaru will be moving in with them — and for half a year at that. The cause of Suguri's agitation? Subaru just rejected her love declaration!

Series conclusions

Fujieda Tohru's ouendan-troped Dragon Girl ends with Rinna shocked to learn that she and Subaru are sibs. What else to do, other than find solace in the arms of Yaotome-senpai?

Hergé's Quick & Flupke also wraps, with the release of bande dessinée #7 through 12 (unless m&c! still has tome 3, Haute tension, caught in the AT LEAST two months to publish one translated volume production cycle).

moar m&c! trivia
It apparently takes a comic artist anywhere from two to 12 months to crank out one volume, depending on the creator- and his/her assistants' speed.

KOLONI local comics: Supernatural pwns!

The continuation of Azisa Noor's Satu Atap—a comedy set in a Bandung boarding house populated by not-quite human residents—and the standalone Merdeka: Di Bukit Selarong also street on the 28th. The latter KOLONI story was the brainchild of Ockto (B.O.C.A.H.), with Seta & Bayu collaborating on the art. Merdeka: Di Bukit Selarong takes Dani and friends to an alternate world in which national heroes still wage war. Home-grown but internationally-renowned comics artist Chris Lie (Return to Labyrinth, G.I. Joe - SIGMA 6 series) called the Merdeka premise brilliant and recommends the local manga as an educational aid.

MANGAZINES

Cherry 45/2010 (m&c!)

I Love Food and Karen-chan (Meshimase Karen-chan) by Akino Miru rates the Cherry 45/2010 front cover. The first issue after the Indonesian Ciao/ChuChu/Sho-Comi mangazine turned five also highlights GothLoli fashion, while the Nihongo Tanoshi feature snap teaches katakana. Meanwhile, regular column Shaberimashou asks: What is kosupuri? and Itadakimasu puts sukiyaki on the table.
