two-by-two
I am quickly realizing the full weight of having to make every decision on my own... the worry over maintaining a house and property rests on my shoulders now and it's a scary thing. Well, maybe not scary, but worrisome at least. Damn! Every time I sit down to write one of these blog posts, I end up in tears.
Anyway, two-by-two is so much better than solo.
Oscars 2009: Who Will Win?
As huge lovers of movies and all things Hollywood, we thought we'd share our picks for the top 6 categories. Our choices are based on industry buzz, personal preference, and gut feelings. We do not under any circumstances suggest you use our picks for any Oscar pool you might be doing...
Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Yes, we realize this is the safe choice. But with the amount of buzz this movie has generated, we feel it's an absolute no-brainer. Every now and then, the Academy votes for the feel-good movie of the year--and Slumdog looks like the next big winner.
Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Do you see a trend? We think they'll sweep these top two awards. Beg to differ?
Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
We're not huge fans of Mr. Rourke but his performance was amazing and well respected across Hollywood. Many think Sean Penn may nab this one but we're going with our gut and picking Mickey. (Now if only he'd stop stalking Evan Rachel Wood...)
Best Actress: Kate Winslet, The Reader
Winslet's Oscar win is long overdue--we know it, she knows it, even the Academy knows it. Let's hope the universe works itself out and she wins a golden statue tonight. We heart Kate.
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Because his performance was THAT GOOD. He commanded your attention while onscreen and delivered an almost-perfect performance. The academy will most definitely recognize this with a win.
Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz, Vicki Cristina Barcelona
You couldn't take your eyes off her. She's an underrated actress who just might come into her own tonight.

Creative Commons Gallery
We have just launched a new series of artists postcards 'Creative Commons Gallery' which are now in distribution through our postcard racks. In line with the creative commons movement where people release some of their intellectual property rights under a special licence, so that their work can be shared, built upon or enjoyed by others we are printing a selection of artists work that is in the public domain under a creative commons licence.
If you have any suggestions of future artists and their work ( that is available under a creative commons licence)that we should feature please let us know. Contact emily@thepictureworks.com or mark@thepictureworks.com with your suggestions.

a wider view
I am going to try taking a wider view in (some of) my photos. I have a tendency to start shooting and then get in really close... fascinated by the small details that most of us miss. But I want to learn to see the bigger picture and hone my landscape and cityscape skills.
And... a broader perspective in other areas couldn't hurt either.
the heart
My first thought was to just avoid the whole Valentine's Day hoopla... have a heart-less day, sorta. It seems that I would have to hide under my bed in order to do that, so I am now just trying not to be a Debbie Downer... a wet, red, hearts-and-flowers blanket on everyone else's hoopla.
Trying....

Spotted!
We caught up with the couple and briefly asked them about their impending nuptials…
“It was so special! Just a dream come true... Getting engaged is a lot of fun, and a lot of nerves!”
Says Max on picking the perfect ring for Karina:
“You never really know… you just put yourself out there... I just picked what I liked and hoped for the best! My biggest concern was if it was big enough!”—India-Jewel Jackson

two months
Two months. I seem to be falling into a routine that gets me through the day. Who am I kidding? I don't have a routine. But, I'm getting pretty good at pretending that I'm okay. I go through the motions, do what needs to be done, lay my head down at night and somehow, eventually, it is morning again. Two months.
