Golden Week has come and gone in RL, but not so in Hayate The Combat Butler Land. In screwball action-comedy at your service volume 20, Japan's longest vacation window should've been THE Chance! for Cry Cute Nagi to monopolize Trope-Codifier-it-sez-Combat Butler-right-there-in-the-title Hayate, but Plot Bunnies Say Otherwise. Also, the holiday group targeting Turkey as its destination ends up on Mykonos. Teh usual hijinks ensue — inside an underground labyrinth.

NEW ELEX TITLES: One seinen yonkoma, two soonjung manhwa

Elex drags out three of its premiering properties: Hidamari Sketch by Aoki Ume; A Kiss for My Prince by Kim HeeEun; and the New Sexy Simpleton sequel. (Actually, the prolific New Sexy Simpleton manhwa-ga has two titles skedded; Hwang MiRee's Legend of Nereid volume 7 also streets on the 9th.) Intros to A Kiss for My Prince and New Sexy Simpleton (along with blurbs for other ongoing series) can be found below the manga lists.

Hidamari Sketch 1 by Aoki Ume
In front of Yamabuki High School stands the Hidamari Apartments. On this day, seniors hang out from the veranda, eagerly awaiting their new kohai. New student Yuno moves into the apartment, becomes friends with the girls living there, and Moe Happens.

Elex doesn't delve into the creatively kooky cast of characters Yen Press cites in its English Sunshine Sketch 1 blurb (Yuno's homeroom teach is a cosplay otaku and the principal is just...weird), but TV Tropes kicks off Hidamari Sketch with the time-honored “warning” to new tenants:

Yamabuki High School's arts program attracts students from all around the country. The Hidamari Apartments is a small apartment block across from Yamabuki High School, infamous for housing weirdos from the arts program.

But they've all graduated! We're normal now!

Terminal cuteness is not limited to the manga. The 4-koma slice of life has been adapted into three anime seasons: Hidamari Sketch (2007.01-2007.03), Hidamari Sketch × 365 (2008.07-2009.09 + 2x specials 2009.10), and Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆ (March 2010.01-2010.03). Two light novels also illustrated by Aoki Ume-sensei were published in 2007.

Other 9 June 2010 highlights

As mentioned above, there are three new series, two of which also constitute the one-fifth soonjung manhwa share.

Renowned American guitarist Eddie Lee is found dead on a California roadside, shot twice through the head and chest.

And that Dying Breed becomes “Extinct.”

Dear Boys Act III 2 by Yagami Hiroki

As the Celtics take on the Lakers in the NBA finals —

Mizuho goes up against Narita Chuoh and the Mizuho cagers are having a tough time of it. Not only could Toya care less on the court, captain Fujiwara Takumi loses his game face, not to mention his concentration. Does defeat await Mizuho?

A Kiss for My Prince 1 by Kim HeeEun [Premiere]

The Orphan, Prince, Princess, Fallen Nobility, and Royal Family-tagged Kiss for My Prince manhwa by Kim HeeEun (Dear My Girls) should have debuted in May (according to Komikologi), but I suppose royalty's allowed to be fashionably late.

Chayene vaguely remembers life as an aristocrat. To find out more about her past, she follows Sean's suggestion to work in the palace as June's maid.

Again, Elex's blurb a bit vague, prolly to parallel Chayene's memories. Infinity Studios' English A Kiss for My Prince 1 description adds color by pointing out that orphan Sei-Ann (Chayene) grew up in a countess's household and that with above average looks and ambitions that would rival that of a king, Sei-Ann is determined to leave her social status behind and become the wife of the next Crown Prince. We already know from Elex's summary that she's one step farther in her dream with her maid appointment—actually, two steps as one of the prince's sibs falls for her—but 10 steps (or more) back because she may be the last surviving heir to a family which was closely tied to the Royal family but later branded as traitors!

I suppose Sean is Sian and June is Joon. For   [SPOILAGE] on these two characters, see this Wiki entry.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami 39 of 39 by Shiina Takashi [Finale]

Year 2199, in the ruins of the Mikami GS Company live three ghosts. Can the strongest private exorcist Mikami Reiko safely send off these dearly departed?

Elex claims the GS Mikami finale is dripping in tears. (Not howls?)

Volume 39 contains seven chapters:

  1. マジカル・ミステリー・ツアー!!(その1) (Magical Mystery Tour 1)
  2. マジカル・ミステリー・ツアー!!(その2) (Magical Mystery Tour 2)

Royalty (and celebrities) fashionably late, Part Deux.

When we last left Eun bi, the time-slipping fan fave CF model had returned to the present, the Tang Dynasty emperor in tow. What's next for Eun bi and her (not-so) ancient Chinese boyfriend?

Efon O

DO WANT!

Gugel sightings indicate another jaunt through time. And as it appears that Art Evolution has taken place—of Legend of Nereid and Cutie Boy proportions—I'm definitely going to GET! this, along with the still missing from my library Sexy Simpleton volumes. (Thanks, freekenari-chan for the Hang in there; it gets better after volume 4 recommend.)

Legend of Nereid 7 by Hwang MiRee

Matia returns to Akaron to restore the sword of Poseidon to its home before the next Ocean warrior ritual. She reaches the island just as General Themedes and his troops are preparing to attack. The lovers are reunited for a short time before the impending assault forces their separation again.

A Prince Thaion fangirl regardless, I consider Themedes x Matia as The OTP here (just as Nereid canon prescribes). I actually think Hwang MiRee was able to pull off this May December Romance with WAFF instead of squick. (Although Your Mileage May Vary; I know someone—*cough*Raven-chan*cough*—who just can't abide Hwang MiRee's plotting and reader payoff.)

LUM, The Invader Girl 23 by Takahashi Rumiko

Bumbling well-meaning Magical Girlfriend Lum tells the girls of Tomobiki High that even if they lack super powers, they have nothing to fear from the gangs preying upon them. She insists that with only courage as their capital, the girls can win.

I don't read this Darling no BAKA! series, but I'm assuming from the Elex cover that the Indonesian release is the shinsoban edition, first issued in Japan between 2006.11 and 2008.03.

Tokkyu! 12 by Komori Yoichi & Kubo Mitsuro

Elex's Tokkyu! 12 blurb is a summary and science lesson in one:

Kalau kita membuka mata di dalam kolam renang, atau di dalam bak mandi, semuanya akan terlihat jadi kabur. Itu disebabkan oleh adanya pembelokan cahaya yang berbeda antara di daratan dengan di dalam air. Tapi Hyogo mempunyai pengelihatan yang berbeda, seperti yang dimiliki suku Mouken.

Let me clarify the above with Wiki's help:

Light rays bend when they travel from one medium to another; the amount of bending is determined by the refractive indices of the two media. If one medium has a particular curved shape, it functions as a lens. The cornea, humours, and crystalline lens of the eye together form a lens that focuses images on the retina. Our eyes are adapted for viewing in air. Water, however, has approximately the same refractive index as the cornea (both about 1.33), effectively eliminating the cornea's focusing properties. When our eyes are in water, instead of their focusing images on the retina, they now focus them far behind the retina, resulting in an extremely blurred image from hypermetropia.

So what it's saying, in effect, is that Tokkyu! protagonist Hyogo is just like the the Moken tribespeople who are able to focus underwater to pick up tiny shellfish and other food items, the visual focus accommodation appearing to owe much to training rather than evolution or genetics. In Hyogo's case... we have to find out the why in volume 12.

At any rate, I wonder what Foe Yay (again, YMMV) Meguru has to say about Hyogo's underwater vision acuity?

Wild Life 5 by Fujisaki Masato

Perfect pitched Iwashiro Tessho—a vet with a heart big enough to float a planet—works under Tsukasa Ryoto, the R.E.D Hospital Section 2 head who possesses a sense of absolute insight of animals. Before the pair appears animal enemy #1 Shiryo who considers wild life no better than garbage.

Kick that Dog-Kicking bad guy's a*se with your earnest shounen grit, Tessho! Mess with his head, Ryoto!

Elex promises a duel “to the death” in Wild Life volume 5.

Volume 5 contains chapters:

  • 34 陵刀は侵略者(インベーダー)?
  • 35-36 恋愛戦争(ラブウォーズ)エピソード1(前・後編)
  • 37 射殺か捕獲か
  • 38 見捨てられる気持ち
