I want you to kill me.
Ring a bell? How about — Vampire Knight? Yup, Elex finally set loose the Shoujo Manga with a Plot and a Profusion of Blood-drenched Bishounen Undead tankou this Wednesday.
Now, I'm 99.99% sure you're already acquainted with Vampire Knight's plot—even if only in Nice to meetcha! passing—but just in “Percentage is Not Zero (Kiriyu)” case, Hino Matsuri's most popular manga takes place in Cross Academy, a high school literally divided (into Day and Night classes). Prefects Cross Yuki and Kiriyu Zero make sure that never the twain shall meet, keeping the Fangirl/boy mode »ON! Day students away from the Ridiculously Gor-jus! Night class, led by Kuran Kaname. They do this to guard Kaname's and the entire Night class's secret: all of them are blood-sucking vampires.
Yuki (as pointed out by VIZ's Vampire Knight 1 blurb) believes peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires is possible—what with Kaname rescuing her from one and always indulging her thereafter—but My Hero Zero believes otherwise.
Looking at that synopsis of volume 1 (which encompasses First to Fifth Nights) and viewing it from the perspective of two anime seasons (that the manga-ka reportedly hated) and more than a decade of manga volumes (volume 12 releases in Japan this July) later, it's the height of Natsukashii! — especially when we recall what Hino Matsuri-sensei herself had to say about (pre Twilight) VK:
I wanted to try writing a ‘campus love story’ or a ‘tragic vampire love story’, but somehow I just felt really awkward about the idea of writing such stories about vampires... And then I started writing Vampire Knight...
And now post The Reveal but still outstanding Murder the Hypotenuse of The Love Triangle, even that I want you to kill me
line (originally Zero's) could well have issued from Yuki's lips. (Cf. Memorable Quotes,
46th Night: Enemies for Yuki's actual dialogue.) Testament to how much the OTP wa ZeYuu has evolved—and how much catching up you have to do if you've yet to read the series. (That's actually an exhortation to GET!)
Blurbs of the other premieres, Rakka Ryuusui and Sanzoku Ou, as well as the latest FAIRY TAIL (volume 6) takes place after the manga list.
With Elex's Vampire Knight 1 release, that makes seven ongoing HanaLaLa serials (Alice Academy, La Corda D'Oro, Ouran High School Host Club, Skip Beat!, V.B. Rose, and With My Brothers) that have leaped to tankou.
And since I already mentioned mangazines —
Nakayoshi 81/2010 and Shonen Star 66/2010
Nakayoshi Gress! premieres Fukushima Haruka's shoujo romance comedy Chocolate and resumes My Fiancé is a Monster (Fiancé wa Monster!?), the supernatural fantasy by Hanamori Pink, in Issue 81.
The Indonesian Shonen Sunday, Shonen Star, meanwhile, pushes Defense Devil and to a milder, it's not the cover extent, Kekkaishi, in Issue 66. (More babble after the manga list.)

NEW ELEX TITLES
Rakka Ryuusui 1 by Sanada Ikki
After K-ON!, Otoboke Section Chief, Kuro Memanggul Peti Mati (Hitsugi Katsugi no Kuro), and Hidamari Sketch, Elex introduces Indonesia to the next 4-koma seinen manga from Houbunsha — Rakka Ryuusui AKA Falling Petals, Running Water by Sanada Ikki.
First year student Hayama Akiho joins the Sakuraba Girl's High kyuudo club after falling in love with club prez Hokaze Minatsu. Despite lacking prior archery experience, Akiho muddles through her club days, makes friends with the other members, and—just like Petals Falling into Running Water—languishes in her (perverted) unrequited love for Minatsu.
In case the blurb hasn't made it more than evident, this is a yuri manga. In the drama CDs, seiyuu Nakahara Mai plays Akiho and Endo Aya is Minatsu.
Sanada Ikki is also the manga-ka of another seinen yuri title, Shitsuji Shoujo to Ojousama or Butler Girl and Señorita.
Sanzoku Ou: King of Bandits 1 by Sawada Hirofumi
The Five Stars foretold to usher in a new age has risen. Does the omen presage the end of the Kamakura shogunate's tyranny?
This historical shounen manga by Sawada Hirofumi, creator of (also samurai-troped) Shanaou Yoshitsune and its sequel Shanaou Yoshitsune Genpei War follows protagonist Nagato's quest to avenge his father's death. For bearing the mark of a star on his chest, symbol of the one prophesied to topple the feudal regime, Nagato is hunted down by imperial agents.
Sanzoku Ou: King of Bandits continues to be serialized in Shonen Magz, the Indonesian version of Kodansha's Shonen Magazine.
Continuing series
Fairy Tail 6 of 21+ by Mashima Hiro
Fiery Salamander Natsu Dragneel and allies struggle to stop the imminent resurrection of Deliola, but before they can do so, a bone-chilling cry rends the skies. Has the most maleficent evil finally awoken? Meanwhile, rival Gray Fullbuster prepares to sacrifice himself by using the ice dossier magic he learned from Sensei Ull. Who will win the final battle on Galuna Island?
Del Rey's Fairy Tail Volume 6: Demon Rising adds that a grudge between Fairy Tail and a rival guild turns to all-out war.
Fairy Tail volume 6 contains chapters:
- 40
Galuna Island: The Final Battle
(ガルナ島 最終決戦Garuna-tō saishū kessen
) - 41
The Demon's War Cry
(悪魔のおたけびAkuma no otakebi

TV Tropes attributes the magical manga's favorited status in Japan to its resemblance to One Piece, but concedes that it also pwns on its own beautiful drawing, imaginative magic and unusually deep (for shonen series, anyway) Character Development
merit. I'm convinced the latter factors played their part in winning for Fairy Tail the Best Shounen Manga prize at the 2009 Kodansha Manga Awards, an honor it shared that year with Katou Motohiro's shounen tantei manga Q.E.D..
Fairy Tail's marketability is likewise proven by its getting crossovered with another Weekly Shonen Magazine title (Yankee-kun to Megane-chan in 2008) and adapted to anime (33 episodes so far), starring Kakihara Tetsuya (Ikkun, Kaichou wa Maid-sama! drama CD) as Natsu, Nakamura Yuuichi as Gray, and Hirano Aya as Lucy Heartfilia. As for international bankability, aside from Del Rey and Elex Media (which also serializes the manga in Shonen Magz), Pika Édition France, Tong Li Taiwan, and Chuang Yi Singapore (whose simplified Chinese editions have reached volume #20) also publish Fairy Tail.
A Kiss for My Prince 2 of 5 by Kim HeeEun
As Elex doesn't have a blurb for this volume of Kim HeeEun's soonjung manhwa, borrowing Infinity Studios' A Kiss for My Prince volume 2 summary:
Slowly yet surely, it's becoming evident that each of the three princes has feelings for Sei-Ann¹. The only question now is which of the princes does Sei-Ann truly like. The decision becomes harder when each of them won't admit to themselves how they truly feel, and each of them having secrets and hidden agendas doesn't help either. To make things worse for Sei-Ann, she now has a rival: a childhood lady friend of the princes. As the daughter of the most powerful retainer to the royal family, she most certainly going to get first choice out of the Princes. What's Sei-Ann to do?!
¹ Chayene in Elex Media's edition.
Legend of Nereid 8 of 15 by Hwang MiRee
Meanwhile, in Hwang MiRee's set in faux ancient Greece soonjung romance, Legend of Nereid — in which an Oh what a tangled web we weave/When first we practice to deceive prophecy entangles the fates of an ocean warrior, a general, and a foreign prince into It's Complicated...
Her mentor Lord Muta lies dying in Matia's arms; between what she can see and what lover Themedes utters, which will she choose to believe?
New Sexy Simpleton 2 of 9 by Hwang MiRee
Still back to the past, but this time, time-slipping to ancient China —
Because of a shoe—or was it because of a bandage?—Mi ju and the king have to return to the past. What kind of days await our couple this time around?
New Sexy Simpleton volume 3 is penciled in for release next Wednesday (23 June).
Just a sampling of Hwang MiRee's 90+ cranking it out manhwa prolificacy (that's titles, not volumes; volumes just from Legend of Nereid, Sexy Simpleton, and the following completed series already exceed 100): Become Habituated to Kiss (15 volumes), Boarding House of Hunks (17 volumes), Cutie Boy (eight volumes), Hot Blooded Woman (24 volumes), Love SOS (10 volumes).
With My Brothers 6 of 11 by Tokeino Hari
Miyashita Sakura's birthday is coming up and she screws up her courage to confess her feelings for older Not Blood Sib Masashi. At the same time, Katagiri transfers into her school. Katagiri still acts like he's in love with Sakura; will Sakura's determination waver in the face of Katagiri's “assault,” or will she push through with confronting Masashi-nii and Finally Spit It Out?
Tokeino Hari's Reverse Harem Oniichan to Issho is still running in the Indonesian HanaLaLa, but TOKYOPOP's English Me & My Brothers has already concluded. No anime adaptations like LaLa sib Vampire Knight, but drama CDs—freebie and commercial—yes. (Fukuen Misato, Kondō Takashi, Kamiya Hiroshi, Suzumura Kenichi, and Konishi Katsuyuki voiced Sakura, Masashi, Takashi, Tsuyoshi, and Takeshi in the two drama CDs.)
Tokeino Hari also wrote and illustrated the standalone Hitai ni Mikazuki or Ninja & The Crescent Moon Princess. Current serials include Gakuen Babysitters (in LaLa) and Gyakuten Honey (LaLa Special).
Mangazines
Nakayoshi 81 premieres Chocolate by Fukushima Haruka
The creator of the Bad Boy-troped AAA returns with another school life romance comedy:
They say love is like chocolate: sweet but a little bitter. Grade schooler Chii-chan finds out the truth for herself when a new student Rei-kun transfers into her school. [With additions from Divine Sanctuary's description, excerpted by Baka-Updates Manga]
Fukushima Haruka's Chocolate 「 ちよこれいと 」 is compiled in three volumes. The first was released in 2009.11; the final volume, two weeks ago (2010.06.04).
Fukushima Haruka is also the creator of Cherry Juice, Kedamono Damono, Otona ni Nuts, and Ai's Trouble (Ai ga Nakuchane!).
My Fiancé is a Monster by Hanamori Pink
This Nakayoshi issue also brings back The Title IS the Plot My Fiancé is a Monster (Fiancé wa Monster!?) 「 フィアンセはモンスター!? 」, whose last blog mention was way back in October 2008. The supernatural comedy fantasy stars Hitomi Miku who not only becomes engaged to rich and sexy bishounen Rauto, she also becomes his meido, and when called for it — transforms mahou shoujo-esque (I'll knock out everyone's heart!
) into a Monster Buster when she wears the necklace Rauto gave her. [Adapted from Baka-Updates Manga's description]
Does this mean we're nearing the series finale, if not already there? Fiancé wa Monster!? is only two volumes long, after all.
Hanamori Pink is also the manga-ka of Mermaid Melody and Yume Yume Yu Yu.

Shonen Star 66/2010
Defense Devil by Youn InWan & Yang Kyung-Il
A literal Evil Lawyer? You be the judge (and jury). The titular Defense Devil Mephisto Bart Kucabara is an expatriate demon longing to return home, but he can only do so if he accumulates enough dark matter—found in human sinners—to restore his powers. If he can prove a sinning soul's innocence, he gains custody of his/her dark matter.
Easy, right? Well... no. Kucabara's problem is that he's no Amoral Attorney. He's more likely to fritter away his stockpiled dark matter saving his clients from the grim reapers sent to put them away.
Okay, that's the back story, cobbled together with the help of Wikipedia and Baka-Updates Manga. In the latest installment of the supernatural detective manga, Kucabara's latest client is Nami, a girl who died from getting hit by a moving train. Kucabara has to prove she didn't take her own life and should he fail, the Shinigami Ponzol will take her soul to hell. All evidence points to a suicide, but that's not about to stop our one-devil defense team!
Defense Devil is also published (in simplified Chinese) by Chuang Yi (volume 2 released 16 June 2010).
Kekkaishi by Tanabe Yellow
Wannabe patissier and the Sumimura clan's 22nd Kekkaishi Yoshimori takes on Kaguro, a strong ayakashi clothed in human skin. Yoshimori can just barely defend himself against the master Kokuboro fighter (that TV Tropes describes as a really obvious homage to [Rurouni Kenshin's] Shishio Makoto
), prompting Dude Looks Like A Lady Yagyō troop member Kagemiya to risk his life to aid Yoshimori. A stoopid brave act that triggers Yoshimori's ...
(The word you're looking for is Zekkai; go here if you really want the prelim [SPOILAGE!])
Elex also releases Kekkaishi in tankou (latest volume 3). So does Chuang Yi (simplified Chinese #28 out as at 2010.05.04).
