Basara 21, Shattered Knife 11, Scrameustache by Gos & Walt (Level Comics 4 January 2012 manga and BDs) [UPDATED]

Update: Duck! NikBabble™, INCOMING!

Basara 21 and Shattered Knife 11 (Level Comics)

Basara © Tamura Yumi/Shogakukan [First serialized in Betsucomi] · Oboreru Knife © George Asakura/Kodansha [Serialized in Betsufure]. Published in Indonesia as Basara and Shattered Knife by Elex Media/Level Comics

Tatara succeeds in forging alliances with the other regional commanders, swelling the rebel troops' ranks, even as Shuri takes command of the royal soldiers and declares war against Tatara. Meanwhile, Taro uncovers the Zakuro Plan and hastens to return to Kyoto, but is wounded along the way by Hagiwara's warriors. Can Taro make it back to the capital?

I noted after catching up on Level's Basara that you'd be forgiven for expecting that volume 21 would be the ultimate if not the penultimate volume. Especially after how the action has built up and the prospect of a divided Japan's unity all but sniffable. You already know that's not so, right? Five more Basara volumes sneak in between the 21st and The End.

Shattered Knife vol 11 of 12+
By George Asakura

Oji, the son of Ko's mother's half-sib, learns just how intractable Ko can be, after Ko underestimates him on their first meeting. Oji struggles to make Ko see him as a worthy rival, little realizing that they have more in common than differences.

Assuming Oji is a guy—not reading Shattered Knife—so if I'm mistaken, please be so good as to call me on it. Comment box's down there :)

Twelve Oboreru Knife tankou have been compiled in Japan as of May 2011.

Scrameustache By Gos & Walt

Le Scrameustache, Tome 1:
L'héritier de l'Inca

Published in Indonesia as
Scrameustache:
Pewaris Bangsa Inca

by Elex Media/Level Comics

Level double-launches the Franco-Belgian science fiction BD Scrameustache with volumes 1 and 2, Scrameustache: Pewaris Bangsa Inca (Le Scrameustache: L'héritier de l'Inca) and Scrameustache: Penyihir Ursa Mayor (Le Scrameustache: Le magicien de la Grande Ourse).

The adopted son of a European archeologist, Khena meets a extraterrestrial named Scrameustache, drawn to Khena by the medallion he wears. Before encountering Scrameustache, Khena never thought about where he came from, or life before his adoption by Uncle Georges. Khena and the cat-like alien soon become friends and Scrameustache takes Khena off to Peru, where Khena was first found.

What distinguishes Khena and Scrameustache's story, according to Wiki, is that a certain amount of mystery surrounded Khena himself. As a toddler he had been found in the remains of an earthquake in Peru. He was then adopted by Georges Caillau, a European scholar, archaeologist and ethnologist. Some ten years later, Khena met the Scrameustache and proved himself resistant to the alien's (non-lethal) weapons and other technology. This resistance made the Scrameustache curious and he stuck around hoping that time would provide an explanation.

Maybe the "mystery" has something to do with that "Heir to the Inca" title?

Khena and Scrameustache continue their exploits in Penyihir Ursa Mayor, in which Uncle Georges' friend inexplicably grows a bull's head, and Scrameustache runs into an alien friend who needs help defeating an evil wizard.

GTO Shonan 14 Days 2, Team Medical Dragon 18, Bambino 13 (Level Comics 10 August 2011 manga) [UPDATED]

Skipped GTO 4 this sked, per Elex's more recent (15 August) advisory.

GTO Shonan 14 Days 2 (Level Comics)

GTO Shonan 14 Days © Fujisawa Toru/Kodansha
[Serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine]
Published in Indonesia by Elex Media/Level Comics

Updated with Level artwork and editor resources (not the only one babbling here :D)

Thorn-up-Onizuka's-side Katsuragi apparently just craves attention, not getting any from her father. Even when she's actually kidnapped, Pops doesn't lift a finger, thinking it's all a bluff. What else is Onizuka to do, but save Katsuragi in his own inimitable way...

Level editor Adisti-san observes that Katsuragi's problems are outed in the second GTO Shonan 14 Days. Whether that's what leads to the heart-pounding chase on the streets of Shonan, you'll have to GET! volume 2 to confirm ^_^

Team Medical Dragon 18 of 25 by Nogizaka Taro/Nagai Akira

Professor Takeo's daughter-in-law is rushed to the operating room after an accident. Professor Takeo orders surgical team head Izaka to prioritize his in-law's life, even as the mother insists that the doctor save her baby. At a crucial moment, Akira appears to assist in the operation. Will she choose to uphold the mother's wishes, or that of the Professor?

Team Medical Dragon editor Lenny-san promises that we also understand why Akira affects callous all this time.

Lenny-san also likens the medical drama supervised by Yoshinuma Mie-sensei to the House TV series that stars an unconventional and misanthropic medical genius who heads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH) in New Jersey. (Thanks, Wiki.) I get unconventional medical genius, but misanthropic? Really? (I don't read TMD because Ryu-chan scares me ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶).

Bambino! 13 of 15 by Sekiya Tetsuji

To pay for the bottle of wine he broke, Ban decides to accept Coyote's offer to "cook for the Mafia." But can Ban satisfy the palates of the Italian mafiosi? Or will he end up rueing his decision?

Talk about living dangerously. Ganbare, Ban-chan! p(^^)q

tome 3: Danger dans le Ciel

Published in Indonesia as

Bahaya Di Angkasa

Topping the bande dessinée Do Want! list is Jean-Michel Charlier & Albert Uderzo's Tanguy & Laverdure - Bahaya Di Angkasa (Tanguy et Laverdure, tome 3: Danger dans le Ciel). Tanguy and Laverdure are assigned to Creil's squadron 1/10, also known as the Cigognes or Storks squadron, and pilot the SMB2 (Super Mystère B2) fighter-bomber. Their first mission: patrolling the airspace of Melun-Villaroche military base, declared a No-Fly zone to test a highly-classified French aircraft. One night, a secret transmission is intercepted around Melun-Villaroche; Tanguy scrambles and is forced to chase an enemy reconnaissance jet in the skies above the Seine.

Boule & Bill - Sirkus Keren! (Boule et Bill, tome 29: Quel cirque!) by Verron Laurent also streets this week. Here we see that Bill is not only a cute cocker spaniel, but also a...gardener!? (He buries bones in the hope that they will grow into more bones.)

Rounding out the BD trio is Yakari - Yakari dan Si Tanduk Bercabang (Yakari, tome 23: Yakari et les cornes fourchues) by Derib + Job, in which Yakari and Little Thunder race to save a baby antelope trapped in a wildfire.

Back to manga previews after the release list.

Air Gear 11, Bambino! 3, Historie 1 by Iwaaki Hitoshi (Level Comics 19 May 2010 manga)

Historie 1 (Level Comics)

Contains   [SPOILERS!] and flippant (TV) Trope Identification, The Sequel

Ikki and Team Kogarasumaru challenge lower-seed Potemkin to a duel in volume 11 of Art Major Physics Air Gear, but leveling up in rank might just be thornier than they thought. Potemkin refuses to fight, forcing Ikki to up the stakes by wagering the Fang Regalia.

(In contrast, Del Rey's Air Gear 11 blurb takes a different tack, pointing out how constant fawning has made Air Treck Idol Ikki forget his awesomeness debt to Team Kogarasumaru and asks if loyal, Can Not Spit it Out friend Ringo can save Ikki from himself.)

Bambino! 3 by Sekiya Tetsuji

To reach his Michelin-starred dream, chef wannabe Ban leaves hometown (Fukuoka) and loved ones (girlfriend Eri) for Teh Center of the World: Tokyo in Sekiya Tetsuji's cooking manga Bambino!. But forget a date with Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny; Ban currently pays his dues wait-staffing at a posh Roppongi trattoria, downgraded for the meantime to slicing (non-wondrous) bread.

Can Ban last long enough to get back on the chef fast track (and later, probably star in his own cooking show, if not in a manga *COUGH*Bambino! Secondo*COUGH* sequel)? Well, from the Bambino! 3 cover, Ban right now is giving it his I will do my best! isshokenmei all slinging the pasta at the clientele.

Name-dropping exercise: Bambino! editor Tika-san confesses that the high point of working on this volume was the food-delishus!-food.

NEW LEVEL COMICS TITLES

Historie 1 by Iwaaki Hitoshi

We finally get to post lead Historie, the first of Level's premieres for this sked. Iwaaki Hitoshi's historical manga, an Osamu Tezuka Culture Award finalist, continues its serial run in Kodansha's largely SF/fantasy/horror-skewed Afternoon seinen mangazine.

Historie follows the story of Eumenes of Cardia who would later become secretary to Alexander III of Macedon, more famously known as Alexander The Great, propagator of the hybrid culture Hellenism and changer of the fate (not to mention, the face) of the ancient world.

Level introduces Manga!Eumenes as an intelligent boy, disturbed by a recurring dream about a mysterious woman. The back cover blurb thus asks: Who is she?, a guarenteed curiosity piquer. (Wiki's Historie manga article only hints at the subject of Eumenes' dream.) Tika-san who also edits Historie recommends the series for its unique, Eumenes-perspectived take on Greek politics.

Nik's near-useless addendum: Biography? Alternate history? Historie appears to be not-so subtly underpinned by belief in the Great Man theory, or the Thomas Carlyle view that the history of the world is but the biography of great men. I say this because of its ancient Greek and Persian personages ensemble; aside from Eumenes and Alexander The Great, there's Alexander's tutor Aristotle, father Philip II of Macedon, and Aristotle's father-in-law, Hermias of Atarneus. What's the point of this digression? No point, except I come from the people's history or history from below school of thought, which Wiki describes as:

...the story of mass movements and of the outsiders. Individuals not included in the past in other type of writing about history are part of this theory's primary focus, which includes the disenfranchised, the oppressed, the poor, the nonconformists, and the otherwise forgotten people. This theory also usually focuses on events occurring in the fullness of time, or when an overwhelming wave of smaller events cause certain developments to occur.

I call this rambling useless or near to because I don't have the first volume yet, thus reducing all this to mere speculation.

Dolls of God (Kamisama Dolls) 1 by Yamamura Hajime

Kuga Kyohei is a normal college student whose transplanted, I like it meh life in Weirdness Magnet Tokyo drastically changes when childhood friend Aki and younger sister Utao come to visit. The pair brings in their wake memories of a past best forgotten.

Scanlator Fate (via Baka-Updates Manga) adds that protagonist Kyohei finds himself standing on the corner of Bizarro and Eerie after discovering a corpse propped in an elevator — which has to be Bummer MAX!, especially at the heels of a goukon-responsible alcohol buzz.

It's originally titled Kamisama Dolls, so in addition to dead bodies, Kyohei contends with the eponyms, which like others of their unblinking, glassy-eyed doll ilk prolly promises Creepy Extraordinaire.

Volume Previews continued...

Blade of Immortal 7 by Samura Hiroaki

Driven by the desire to avenge her parents' deaths, the sole survivor of an Itto-Ryu massacre, Asano Rin, attempts to track down the murderous Anotsu Kagehisa, accompanied by immortal samurai Manji. But the leader of the renegade Itto-Ryu swordschool continues to elude them.

Fortunately, a shred of hope remains; the not-quite cold trail leads the pair to female assassin Hyakurin who just might know of Anotsu's whereabouts. Hyakurin, however, refuses to share information with Mugai-ryu outsiders Rin and Manji.

Faced with another seeming dead end, what will Rin and Manji do next?

Level's and Dark Horse Comics's Blade of the Immortal: Heart of Darkness Volume 7 descriptions both took the Very Serious road in blurbing this tankou, making me leery of cheek in my summary adaptation. But not so leery that I wouldn't include a handful of tropes TV Tropes identified with this supernatural chanbara series: Who Wants to Live Forever with an a*rse-kicking Anti-Hero Infested with Awesome (kessen-chu; Manji) and an Affably Evil bishounen Anti-Villain (Anotsu).

Gun Smith Cats 5 by Sonoda Kenichi

Action Girl gunsmith/bounty hunter Rally tries to stop Bad Ass pro wheelman Bean from transporting the designer drug Kerasine to New York. En route, they meet double-dipped in [the] '80s courier driver Riff-Raff. We subvert Rally's original mission momentarily, to give way to the trio's playing tag in fast cars detour.

Shattered Knife 3 by George Asakura

Natsume gives in to Ko's resolve and becomes his girlfriend, but not long after, one of Natsume's fans kidnap her while Ko is attending a festival.

Whichever way you look at the blurb: Ko is #Fail in the boyfriend department.
