HanaLaLa ceases publication; Issue 55/2010 to be the last issue

The Indonesian Hana to Yume/LaLa Farewell Edition releases 8 December 2010 (earlier in some areas).

This tweet from @TheRealHanaLaLa came out of nowhere today:

Dear readers, HL55 akan menjadi edisi penutup, terima kasih bykk atas dukungan selama ini u/selengkapnya mohon klik link http://cot.ag/fbfrNT

*wails* I feel like I've lost a good friend.

The linked Sayonara & Arigato message doesn't cite reasons for the axing, but reassures readers that HanaLaLa manga will continue to release — directly to tankou. The mangazine launched May 2006 serializes, among others, Nakamura Yoshiki's Skip Beat!, Hino Matsuri's Vampire Knight, Higuchi Tachibana's Alice Academy, Hatori Bisco's Ouran High School Host Club and Nakajo Hisaya's Sugar Princess (which wraps in Issue 55).

Still, the lack of explanation makes the official admission —

Untuk bisa bertahan, ada target-target tertentu yang harus dicapai HanaLaLa, dan HanaLaLa bersyukur berkat dukungan kalian semua HanaLaLa bisa bertahan selama empat tahun lebih.

—that the mangazine met targets set by Japanese publisher Hakusensha even more confusing. If it had been performing according to expectation, then what gives?

But before this Good night, Sweet Princess and flights of tenshi sing thee to thy rest post deteriorates into so much conspiracy theorizing, I will stop editorializing there. I will, however, note that despite no warning in the penultimate HanaLaLa 54—which was all Business as Usual—the closure had obviously been in the works for some time (as evidenced by the Farewell Edition slapped on to the HanaLaLa 55 front cover).

The announcement spawned a wave of disbelief and mourning on teh internets; here's a smattering of reactions to HanaLaLa's impending demise:

More farewells here. If you have your own HanaLaLa bye-bye to share, please feel free to use the comments box below. If you have a Twitter account, you might also want to retweet this post (use the Share button) or retweet my I support #HanaLaLa. Pls don't stop publishing the Indonesian Hana to Yume/LaLa tweet. Who knows? We might be able to overturn the closure decision.

If not, much as it pains me to say: Farewell, HanaLaLa, and thanks for the manga memories.

Topeng Kaca 4 Deluxe, Spiral: The Bonds of Reason 9, HanaLaLa 55/2010 - The Farewell Edition (Elex 8 December 2010 manga) [UPDATED]

If you want the lowdown on HanaLaLa's Sayonara & Arigatou end, go here.

Topeng Kaca 4 Deluxe (Elex Media)

Glass no Kamen © Miuchi Suzue/Hakusensha [Serialized in Bessatsu Hana to Yume]
Bunko edition published in Indonesia as Topeng Kaca Deluxe by Elex Media

Albeit small, Kitajima Maya lands a part in Tabuchi Emi's new film. She gives her all to her role as a paraplegic — despite everyone disparaging the rehearsal time she devotes to what would amount to seconds of screen time.

But Maya wouldn't be Maya without the “vicious” training; see where her hard work takes her in Miuchi Suzue's classic Topeng Kaca, the fourth Deluxe edition.

Also, Detektif Conan Animasi TV 23—in which Conan proves Kogoro's former boss innocent (or guilty) of a murder—and Doraemon Movie: Kenangan Nenek, in which Nobita remembers his beloved grandma

Spiral: The Bonds of Reason 9 of 15 by Shirodaira Kyo & Mizuno Eita

The Blade Children pressure a now free Ayumu to take on Kanon; Ayumu refuses, saying he doesn't possess the power to challenge the assassin. Meanwhile, bereft of hope, Kanon yearns for death at Ayumu's hands, claiming that only such an end will give his life meaning.

Will Ayumu grant Kanon's desire?

Volume 9 of Shirodaira Kyo- & Mizuno Eita's shounen detective mystery delves into more dangerous truths in chapters 41 through 45: Ritual of Surrender, The Mote in God's Eye, Time for Love, Is Shroedinger's Cat Alright? and The Eagle Has Swooped Down (NOT the Indonesian titles). I still gotta check whether Elex's Spiral 9 similarly encloses the bonus The Great Detective, Narumi Kiyokata: Kohinata Kurumi's Challenge. (It better.)

I Hate You More Than Anyone 4 of 13 by Hidaka Banri

✿ Elsewhere, Elex backs down on its insisting that I Hate You More Than Anyone 3 was the Sekai de Ichiban Daikirai finale, and issues volume 4 (of 13) this week. Vindication! (Well, we knew that from teh internets, not to mention how the English I Hate You More Than Anyone manga logged some nine volumes before CMX folded.) The shoujo romance AKA Akiyoshi Family Series 5 even has another prequel—Oki ni Mesu Mama?, a one volumer published last September—aside from Akiyoshi-ke Series 1-4 (Pacar 365 Hari, For Endless Love, Stay the Same and Let Me Hear the Lyric). What's more, Hidaka Banri-sensei is working on an alternate Sekai de Ichiban Daikirai story, Tenshi 1/2 Houteishiki, the latest chapter of which appeared in Hana to Yume Issue 24 of 2010.12.05 (released November). So the multi-relationshipped meta series is not about to end anytime soon.

In any case, the fourth I Hate You More Than Anyone follows the Akiyoshi sibs who find that the older one gets, the more one's problems.

Another Hakusensha shoujo manga does conclude at volume 3 — Matsumoto Tomo's Beauty Honey (after the manga list).

NEW ELEX SERIES: Devil & Sweet by Suzuki Julietta

Devil & Sweet 1 (Elex Media)

Akuma to Dolce © Suzuki Julietta
Hakusensha [Hana to Yume]
Published in Indonesia as
Devil & Sweet by Elex Media

Not only does Ogura Mayuri's mama teach her how to bake; she also instructs her introvert daughter in the art of summoning demons. Mayuri does well enough in her lessons that she can rely on a little demon familiar's help with the baking and other kitchen chores.

But obviously, Mayuri's instruction in the magical arts still has gaps because one day, she accidentally summons Belzebeaut, a high-level demon.

Beaut blows his top upon learning that he's been called forth on menial task. What else is Mayuri to do but to let him eat cake?

[Additions from Aerandria Scans's Akuma to Dolce summary]

I wonder if Elex got the Demons, Magic, Food, Demon Love, World Travel, Character That Loves Sweets, Loneliness-troped Devil & Sweet as a package deal with that other more popular Suzuki Julietta manga Kamisama Hajimemashita? (Elex has only been penciling in Nice to Meet You God as an upcoming since October, and the manga is slated to debut this 22nd as Ciuman Dewa.) I wonder because Akuma to Dolce's fate beyond volume 2 (in its home country) remains nebulous, what with Suzuki Julietta-sensei reportedly more focused on the kitsunemimi'ed Kamisama Hajimemashita. If that were indeed the case, I'm wary of getting and starting yet another new series, especially one on hiatus, no matter how appealing a bishie demon with a sweet tooth may be, and more importantly, regardless that Elex's volume 2 is expected to street on the 22nd.

I might've been tempted had Elex instead optioned Karakuri Odette by the same manga-ka. (CMIIW, but I don't think this complete Suzuki Julietta series has been released in Indonesia.)

MANGAZINES: HanaLaLa 55/2010 and Nakayoshi 87/2010

As noted above, the HanaLaLa Farewell Edition streets this week. Issue 55/2010 ramps up Nakajo Hisaya's Sugar Princess to the final three chapters so as to conclude in this edition. If you're a HanaLaLa fangirl (like me), I suggest getting at least two Issue 55's, one for enshrining.

Meanwhile, Issue 87 of the not-axed Indonesian Nakayoshi brings a New Hell Girl special and a one-shot, Love at Infirmary School. (I don't know whose creation this is.)

Moar babble after the manga list.

Doraemon Movie: Kenangan Nenek (Elex Media)

There the pair bumps into three-year-old Nobita, Giant, Suneo and Shizuka. But most of all, Nobita meets Grandma, still in the pink of health.

The Doraemon Movie: Kenangan Nenek manga is based on the short Doraemon film, おばあちゃんの思い出, Doraemon: Obaachan no Omoide or A Grandmother's Recollections. Nobita's nostalgia comes at IDR 24,000 a pop, but that's because his reminiscences are in full color.

Other Doraemon movie manga earlier issued, or rather, reissued by Elex include The Records of Nobita Spaceblazer, Nobita's Legendary King of the Sun and Nobita Drifts in the Universe — bundled as the Paket Doraemon Movie (Jakarta).

The Farewell Edition concludes Nakajo Hisaya's Sugar Princess.

Maaya and Shun perform brilliantly and now only await the judges' decision. If they win, they will be able to save the skating rink. But was Maaya's performance good enough to secure the pair the top prize?

Aside from Sugar Princess chapters 20 to 22, these Hana to Yume/LaLa shoujo serials bid bye-bye this issue with these installments:

Your guess is as good as mine as to when Elex will release the tankou continuation.

I assume that's Ando Natsumi's Arisa on the cover because the serial hyped this issue is that.

Tsubasa sneaks into Manabe's house in disguise and meets a girl in a wheelchair. Who is she?

And as I said before the cut, there's a New Hell Girl special by Etoo Miyuki and the Love at Infirmary School one-shot in this issue.

Idul Adha falling on a Wednesday delays this week's manga shipping by a day, but as if to make up for the (negligible) hitch (or perhaps compensate for the earlier 30% reduction), Elex emancipates 19 titles this 18th, among them, the outstanding-since-August Juvenile Remix 5. (Ando's comeback should make at least a couple of this blog's chatbox regulars happy.)

I personally rejoice over Shinra's return. In the latest C.M.B. by Katou Motohiro, someone sends a music box to Shinra's Wunderkammer. Its provenance is the last word in legit: the music box formerly belonged to an English aristocrat's wife. According to said owner's diary, the music box so enthralled her that her jealous husband was pushed to shooting the thing in ire. What piques Shinra's curiousity is: there's no trace of the instrument having been repaired. At all.

Is the music box's pristine condition the result of magic? The same magic that captivated its mistress? Or is everything not what it seems?

This Elex synop evidently refers to Op.35 Music box that first appeared in Monthly Shonen Magazine's November 2009 issue. In volume 3 of Miuchi Suzue's Glass no Kamen bunko, Topeng Kaca 3 Deluxe: Gone With The Wind (the shoujo classic shares top DO WANT! this sked with the shounen Wild Life 10), Kitajima Maya manages to hold her own against actress Ayumi to win the Tsukikage Acting School a national drama competition berth. Only one *cough* stage is left to clear, but disaster befalls the troop, stranding Maya alone on stage. Despite the stroke of bad luck, Maya performs fabulously, winning the hearts of those in the audience.

So how come the judges are not impressed?

MANGAZINES: HanaLaLa 54/2010: Skip Beat! ♡

HanaLaLa 54/2010 - Skip Beat! front cover

Skip Beat! © Nakamura Yoshiki
Hakusensha

Skip Beat!'s Ren × Kyoko return as cover boy/boy girl in HanaLaLa Issue 54 (I hope; haven't lucked into any final artwork) to mark the double chapter Next Attraction-promised in HanaLaLa 53. Edit: I finally replaced the placeholder art with the cover. In Acts 106-107 of Nakamura Yoshiki's singular showbiz manga, A Bewildering Situation and A Mischievous Situation, Mogami Kyoko transforms into Ku's son Kuon — not just in (boy's) attire but also in (I speak only English) speech. No wonder Ren's thrown for a loop! But can Kyoko's Kuon role win Ku's approval?

Meanwhile, a mere two chapters is no longer enough for Nakajo Hisaya's Sugar Princess; HanaLaLa ups the stakes as Shun and Maya skate to win. Triple the dose means we can expect chapters 17-19 this issue.

Issue 54 also heralds the resurgence of Uno Ayumi's Perjalanan Keliling Dunia Mr. ERMINE (Shokoku Manyu Okojosan). This should be Part 7 as the previous installment last loitering, if I'm not mistaken, was Part 6 (in HanaLaLa 48).

The other Hana to Yume/LaLa serials and their latest installments: Alice Academy by Higuchi Tachibana (Story 84) · Arakure: The Wild Ones by Fujiwara Kiyo (Chapter 34) · Dragon's Fiancé by Kusakawa Nari (Chapter 25) · La Corda D'Oro by Kure Yuki (Symphony 54) · Natsume Yujincho by Midorikawa Yuki (Chapter 8) · Ouran High School Host Club by Hatori Bisco (Chapter 60) · Twinkle Stars by Takaya Natsuki (Chapter 6) · Vampire Knight by Hino Matsuri (32nd Night: The Make-Believe Sandbox) · V.B. Rose by Hidaka Banri (Chapter 54) · With My Brothers by Tokeino Hari (Chapter 53)

New Manga

Lys Lily 1 (Elex Media)

Hanatsukihime © Hibiki Wataru
Hakusensha [LaLa and LaLa DX]
Published in Indonesia as
Lys Lily by Elex Media

Lys Lily 1 of 2 by Hibiki Wataru

Like another LaLa manga Kisah Edo di Abad 21, Lys Lily went through tentative titling (as The Flower Princess per October) before settling with the name under which it makes its formal Indonesian debut. This time, too, I commend Elex for its on-second-thought renaming.

What's more significant than the digression above is Lys Lily's running away with the top Probable DO WANT! prize, what with all the I'm curious; Let's see pledges it garnered.

I'm here to tell you that this short supernatural shoujo fantasy is a definite GET!

Lys is living on borrowed time. When she turns 16, the demon who lent her a heart to save her infant self will retrieve his heart, ending her life. A flower tattoo on her chest denotes their contract.

Accompanied by chance bodyguard Shiva, Lys travels from place to place, seeking the demon to plead for her life. In their wandering, the dancer and her constant companion encounter an obstinate prince, Rasyid, and Thor, a ring jinn.

Can Lys find her demon before he comes to collect his heart?

[Additions from Aerandria's Hanatsukihime description, excerpted by Baka-Updates Manga]

Elex hypes the story as a Cerita romantis 1001 malam antara seorang penari dengan setan or a Thousand and One Nights romance between a dancer and a demon. As mentioned earlier, Demons, Deal with the Devil, Dancing, Tattoo, Possessive Lover are this series' most popular tags.

Manga-ka Hibiki Wataru-sensei's current LaLa serials are the doll- and doll maker-troped Shounen Dolls and the historical gender bender Oiran Girl.

Mixim 11 vol 1 of 10+ by Anzai Nobuyuki

Unlucky in love pals Matsuri Ichimatsu, Sangubashi Takezo and Haruno Koume find there's still hope for their love lives when a mysterious beauty drops from the sky and tells them they're actually princes. The catch? They hail from another galaxy and apparently, so do their fated brides!

I don't yet get why the top Baka-Updates tag for this is Unpopular Protagonist. That by volume 2 Ichimatsu & Co. are   [SPOILAGE!!!] assassination targets, I put down to genre convention. At any rate, I'm not sure even enduring fangirl investment in Flame of Recca can overcome the bad press to translate to some MiXiM 11 (or MiXiM♀12) lurve, but I remain hopeful. (I'll prolly rent volume 1 first.)

Finales

Hell Girl 9 of 9 by Eto Miyuki & Jigoku Shojo Project

The Hell Girl tragedy repeats itself.

Meanwhile, the only person who believes Takuma innocent, police inspector Meshiai Seiichi, goes missing.

Can Hell Girl Enma Ai save Takuma from this spiral of hate?

[Additions from Pika Edition's La Fille des Enfers, tome 9 summary]

The Hell Girl Season 1 finale comprises chapters 32 to 34: Wandering (Parts 1 and 2), Indigo Dye and a special Interlude: Hell of water vapor, or Hostel Traveler that sheds light on Wanyuudou's past.
