Ciuman Dewa 6, Ghost's Doctor 7, Dragon's Fiance 1 by Kusakawa Nari (Elex Media 14 September 2011 manga)

Also, the premiere of Manhwa of the Year Chunchu (2003 winner), Kungfu Boy 5, the Premium or bunko edition, and V.B. Rose 8. (Bags and fashion accessories, anyone? *pokes @eveanna-san :D)

Dragon's Fiancé 1 (Elex Media)

Ryuu no Hanawazurai © Kusakawa Nari/Hakusensha
[First serialized in LaLa]
Published in Indonesia as Dragon's Fiancé by Elex Media

Shakuya got into "marriage politics" early, but almost as soon as, lost her fiancé Lushin Rakka to a sandstorm. Now Shakuya is engaged to Kwan and she's not complainin' except...Lushin chooses this time to reappear to wrest back his fiancée!

That's Elex's summary for Kusakawa Nari's Dragon's Fiancé. Let me continue with the one I wrote when I reviewed Ryuu no Hanawazurai's serial debut in (now defunct) HanaLaLa mangazine:

The amnesiac Lushin succeeds in returning to his hometown, guided by the clue of the rose tattoo on his hand, a tattoo that marks him as the rightful fiancé of Shakuya—who bears the tattoo's magical twin on her right hand. Following his presumed death, Lushin's engagement to Shakuya was dissolved, his position replaced by Kwan who (unlike Lushin when he was younger) is apparently the only person capable of keeping his cool even when the power of Shakuya's emotions force her into dragon mode. Shakuya professes to like Kwan more; the five gentian tattoos on her left hand versus the one rose tattoo on her right for Lushin prove this (the more the tattoos, the greater the supposed affection Shakuya holds for the tattoo's "owner"). Her honesty, however, only spurs to Lushin confess that he likes Shakuya.

To settle the matter of two bridegrooms, the mate capable of making more of his tattoos bloom on Shakuya's hand after a year will become her husband.

If you're interested in what I had to say back then (especially about Shakuya's Lushin tattoos), go here »Dragon's Fiancé, A love triangle decided by who's got more tattoos.

Dragon's Fiancé debuted in the Indonesian Hana to Yume and LaLa in 2008. It serialized until chapter 26 (compiled in RyuuHana volume 5) and is prolly one of the most-missed HanaLaLa serials after the magazine was axed last December. The English Two Flowers for the Dragon fared not much better: CMX Manga managed only six volumes (of seven) before the company folded. But as Elex recommends collecting the manga because it doesn't span that many volumes, I think it's safe to say that Dragon's Fiancé won't suffer Two Flowers's fate and emerge like Tong Li's traditional Chinese version, the 龍族花印記 volume 7 of which released January 2010.

As for the Vietnamese Gia tộc rồngAki Shichiban-san? Care to help me out with the name of the publisher and how many volumes? Thank you~ :) »Edit: Seven volumes published by Kim Dong; Sankyuu, Aki Shichiban-san, for the info ^^

In case you missed it, it is Shakuya, not her fiancés; who is the titular dragon. Yup, whenever Shakuya gets upset, she turns into a fearsome dragon.

The other premiere generating a lot of buzz is —

Chunchu by Kim SungJae & Kim ByungJin

Chunchu 1 (Elex Media)

Chunchu © Kim SungJae
& Kim ByungJin/Haksan

In a barbarous age, twins are born, one of whom, prophecy says, is the devil's spawn. The parents abandon one child, hoping for his swift death, but the forsaken one lives.

What happens now to the devil's son Chunchu? Well... saved from death by his mother, banished by his people, hunted by his brother, and tortured by the demons within. Living and fighting with a low-born warrior tribe who can never trust him, Chunchu lives a life of blood and violence, every day a struggle to survive. But something mysterious lurks within his cold exterior, something that could be awakened by the touch of a woman. (Thanks, Dark Horse, for teh lowdown on this 2003 Manhwa of the Year awardee [from Chunchu: The Genocide Fiend, Vol. 1 blurb].

Aside from Award-Winning Work, Prophecy, Twins, Baka-Updates Manga users tag ChunChu with the additional Royal Family (that's a hint, gotta be!) and Ssaurabi that Wiki explains is a Modern Korean compound which literally means ‘a father who fights’. Intrigued yet? Let me just warn you though that Chunchu is 15 volumes long, and is on HIATUS.

Other debuts—another manhwa series, Be Good by Kim GiJung & Shin InChol that eludes even Gugel (save for hits pointing to Elex's version), the Crayon Shinchan World Heritage edu-manga Warisan Dunia and the Doraemon Movie Nobita Dalam Dunia Misteri mangafication—are previewed Below the Cut, as are top DO WANT! Ciuman Dewa (Kamisama Hajimemashita) volume 6, Ghost's Doctor (Youkai no Oishasan) 7 and the above-mentioned Kungfu Boy Premium 5.

One Piece 58, Dream Eater Merry 2, Kome Si Belang 3 (Elex Media 1 June 2011 manga) [UPDATE2]

Update 2: Crayon Shinchan 6 has been postponed. No new street date advised, so, keeping it here. Moved to the 8th

Actually, the post title should've read One Piece 58, Dream Eater Merry 2 AND Hyde & Closer 6, but GET! third-placer Hyde & Closer got reskedded to the 15th. Otherwise, the manga list is the same as Elex's.

One Piece 58 (Elex Media)

One Piece © Oda Eiichiro/Shueisha
[Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump]
Published in Indonesia by Elex Media

Shirohige is stabbed, further tilting the balance against the Whitebeard pirates, already suffering heavy losses in the Battle of Marineford. Meanwhile, Luffy, determined to rescue Ace, faces off against one Navy admiral after another.

Go »here for moar summary specificity than Elex's Indonesian take on One Piece 58's Japanese blurb. Wiki's not-so mini spoilage builds up the suspense better.

One Piece volume 58, The Name of This Era is ‘Whitebeard’, compiles chapters 563 through 573: One Man, One Heart, The Man Who Shook the World, Oars' Path, Raid, Marineford Navy Headquarters - Oris Plaza, Have It Your Way!, White Monster, The Bridge of Life, The Execution Platform, The Times They Are A-Changin’ and The Name of This Era is ‘Whitebeard’. (*NOT Elex chapter titles)

Dream Eater Merry 2 of 6+ by Ushiki Yoshitaka

Not all dream demons exchange their dream domain for an earthly one; some access the human world to eliminate other dream demons. Engi Threepiece is one such, ingressing into the real world to avenge her sister's death at the hands of Pharos Hercules, who leads the charge to replace humans with dream demons.

I'm still waiting for an Elex back cover blurb that actually mentions Dream Eater Merry's male protagonist, Yumeji. Maybe next volume.

Now for some huggable keeyootness —

Kome Si Belang 3 of 4+ by Hoshino Natsumi

Awww...you just gotta cuddle Kome for patience above and beyond the call of duty. She lets Koyuki snatch away her toys, finishes off the diet kibble Koyuki turns her cute nose up at and allows Koyuki to relieve teething troubles on Kome's back. In short, Kome takes good care of Koyuki when mom and Taku are busy.

But with the arrival of Koyuki's kitten pals Gonta and Hime to Nakarai Manor, Kome needs to stretch her patience threefold.

Nyan~?!

This tweet from @TheRealHanaLaLa came out of nowhere today:

Dear readers, HL55 akan menjadi edisi penutup, terima kasih bykk atas dukungan selama ini u/selengkapnya mohon klik link http://cot.ag/fbfrNT

*wails* I feel like I've lost a good friend.

The linked Sayonara & Arigato message doesn't cite reasons for the axing, but reassures readers that HanaLaLa manga will continue to release — directly to tankou. The mangazine launched May 2006 serializes, among others, Nakamura Yoshiki's Skip Beat!, Hino Matsuri's Vampire Knight, Higuchi Tachibana's Alice Academy, Hatori Bisco's Ouran High School Host Club and Nakajo Hisaya's Sugar Princess (which wraps in Issue 55).

Still, the lack of explanation makes the official admission —

Untuk bisa bertahan, ada target-target tertentu yang harus dicapai HanaLaLa, dan HanaLaLa bersyukur berkat dukungan kalian semua HanaLaLa bisa bertahan selama empat tahun lebih.

—that the mangazine met targets set by Japanese publisher Hakusensha even more confusing. If it had been performing according to expectation, then what gives?

But before this Good night, Sweet Princess and flights of tenshi sing thee to thy rest post deteriorates into so much conspiracy theorizing, I will stop editorializing there. I will, however, note that despite no warning in the penultimate HanaLaLa 54—which was all Business as Usual—the closure had obviously been in the works for some time (as evidenced by the Farewell Edition slapped on to the HanaLaLa 55 front cover).

The announcement spawned a wave of disbelief and mourning on teh internets; here's a smattering of reactions to HanaLaLa's impending demise:

More farewells here. If you have your own HanaLaLa bye-bye to share, please feel free to use the comments box below. If you have a Twitter account, you might also want to retweet this post (use the Share button) or retweet my I support #HanaLaLa. Pls don't stop publishing the Indonesian Hana to Yume/LaLa tweet. Who knows? We might be able to overturn the closure decision.

If not, much as it pains me to say: Farewell, HanaLaLa, and thanks for the manga memories.

Red Haired Snow White 3, Toradora 1, Summer Storm! 2 (Elex Media 14 July 2010 manga)

Minimal post (sorta) until RL decides to cut me some slack.

赤髪の白雪姫 3

Akagami no Shirayukihime © Akizuki Sorata/Hakusensha (Serialized in LaLa DX)
Published in Indonesia as Red Haired Snow White by Elex Media Komputindo

Zen's big bro Izana tries to boot Shirayuki out of Clarines by inviting the definitely unwelcome prince Raji of Tanbarun, Shirayuki's spurned suitor, to the castle in Red Haired Snow White volume 3. (Pretty sure Prince among Princes Zen will “terrorize” Raji again; can't wait.)

Aside from the political intrigues in Akizuki Sorata's neo-faerie tale Akagami no Shirayukihime, here are the other highlights of this Elex release:

New Elex Titles

Three more manga series ex-June finally debut. Aside from Toradora starring superficially fearsome Takasu Ryuuji and definitely ferocious Aisaka Taiga (you've probably already met them in the anime), there's Tena on S String, the Manga Time Kirara Forward seinen adventure about Ordinary High School Student Kyosuke who gets into an accident and wakes up hearing music all around. (Elex Book Reviews likens Tena to Shakugan no Shana — prolly for its sudden servitude and tsundere tropes.) The third is Rockwell the Scarlet Knight, the story of the poor but earnest eponymous Rockwell, living by the chivalric code.

Series finales

Hikawa Kyouko's historical shoujo fantasyFairy-Tale-Motif Brocade—ends with Elex's release of volume 5 (after making us wait for more than a year). Protagonists Suzu and Shinkuro face even stronger enemies, while trying to make sense of their feelings.

The Otogimoyou Ayanishiki conclusion begs the question: The Otogimoyou Ayanishiki Futatabi sequel wa?

Mangazines

Two manga anthologies: the Indonesian Nakayoshi (#82) and Issue 68 of Shonen Star, the local Shonen Sunday.

This Naka highlights Toyama Ema's rabu triangle/blackmail-troped romance comedy XX Me! or Watashi ni xx Shinasai!, in which Akira wants to be Yukina's boyfriend, replacing Shigure, in the newest chapter.

Meanwhile, the latest ShoStar premieres Takkoku!!!タッコク!!! 」, the If you want to declare your love for somebody, play some ping-pong first!-premised shounen comedy by Fukuchi Tsubasa, creator of The Law of Ueki.

[Reissues]

Box Set Round Two for One Piece (volumes 1-10; 11-20; 21-30; and 31-40 redux), Eyeshield 21 (volumes 1-10 of 37) and Kitchen Princess (volumes 1-10 of 10). Each “value” set retails for IDR 160,000, which constitutes an increase of between 10% to 60% (depending on which series) from the first time these were bundled. (More on prices below.) Also, there's the six-pack compile of Doraemon cinemangafication, Paket Doraemon Movie (Jakarta), which reissues movies 1 through 3, i.e., The Records of Nobita Spaceblazer, Nobita's Legendary King of the Sun and Nobita Drifts in the Universe.

Some stats and price reminders

  • Excluding reissues, we have shoujo grabbing a 44% share VS shounen's 37%
  • Excluding mangazines, publisher share breaks down to Hakusensha: four titles, tied with Shogakukan, with Kodansha contributing two titles
  • All manga are priced at IDR 16,500 each, except the Doraemon Movie set (SRP: IDR 125,000) and Kumpulan Cerita Berwarna Doraemon 4 (IDR 29,800, from a previous IDR 28,800). Nakayoshi remains at IDR 27,000/volume, but Shonen Star increases its price to IDR 30,000.
