CMB 12, Naruto 49, Summer Storm! 4 (Elex Media 1 September 2010 manga)

And the last Kunai Legend (volume 4). But before we get to that —

C.M.B. 12 (Elex Media)

C.M.B. Shinra Hakubutsukan no Jiken Mokuroku © Katou Motohiro
Kodansha (Serialized in Monthly Shonen Magazine)
Published in Indonesia as C.M.B. by Elex Media Komputindo

Hong Kong. A man flies off a building rooftop and is found only three days later. Meanwhile, a popular actress complains of seeing ghosts. Everything traces its genesis to Jingzhe, the day when insects—and disaster-harbinger spirits—rouse from their winter slumber.

Wonder what C.M.B. rings heir/museum curator Sakaki Shinra wants for his Wunderkammer from (the blurbed) Op.31: Ghosts, the third story of C.M.B. volume 12? Toma So's cousin is definitely hauling back at least three curiosities as he's also summoned to investigate ancient Babylonian tablets gone missing from the Louvre in the preceding Op.29 Clay seal and a locked room death in Op.30 Old woman and monkey — in which the only witness is a...dog? (I crafted the other two snap summaries from the Japanese Wiki synops, so please forgive misinterps.)

As for the top DO WANT! of this 80% SBV (Shounen By Volume) Elex release —

Naruto 49 of 52+ by Kishimoto Masashi

To preempt the inevitable assault from the renegade Akatsuki, Raikage convenes the five Kage; reps from the most powerful ninja villages descend upon Tetsu country. Meanwhile, Naruto tries to negotiate with the Raikage to avert Kumogakure's termination of Sasuke.

Continuing series previews resume below the manga list.

Kunai Legend 4 of 4 by Iori Tabasa

Ultimate battle against Suzushiro! Kunai and Jako face off with Suzushiro as Izuna learns that Kunai is actually a vampire. Will Izuna, Vampire Hunter, choose to hunt down Kunai? Or will she pay her grandfather's warnings no heed and side with Kunai in his fight against Suzushiro? Her decision determines whether or not Suzushiro can be sealed for all eternity.

(Now I can finally start Kunai Legend. Been holding up the read for until the series wrapped.)

MANGAZINES: Shonen Magz 76/2010

Another clash approaches climax in Shonen Magz 76/2010. The latest Sanzoku Ou: King of Bandits sees Nagato falling for Takatoki's ruse, thus allowing his opponent to hack-n-slash at Nagato with his sword. Drenched in blood, can the seemingly gravely-wounded Nagato still prevail?

(Volume 3 of Sawada Hirofumi's samurai action drama about the feudal order-destroying fugitive Nagato streets the same day as the series' newest ShoMagz chapter, but that synopsis comes later.)

Sanzoku Ou's other kewl shounen (and seinen) companions: BECK by Harold Sakuishi, Code:Breaker by Kamijyo Akimine, Fairy Tail by Mashima Hiro (Natsu's anime premieres this 30 September on Animax), Ghost Doctor by Sato Yuki, Kindaichi Case Files by Amagi Seimaru & Sato Fumiya (voodoo murders this episode), Kung Fu Boy Legends by Maekawa Takeshi, School Rumble by Kobayashi Jin, Tokkyu! by Komori Yoichi & Kubo Mitsuro (volume 13 ships concurrently), Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE by CLAMP and Vinland Saga by Yukimura Makoto.

Volume previews continued...

Animal Doctor 2 of 12 by Sasaki Noriko

So's he can take care of his “unusual” pet himself, Masaki pursues further studies in veterinary medicine. Along with his best bud Nikaido and eccentric senpai Hishinuma, Masaki spends days at University H prepping reports on various animal life.

Just what exactly do they observe? Or more to the point, what are their “lab subjects” thinking??

Otoboke Section Chief 6 of 22+ by Ueda Masashi

Regardless that he has next to no parental dignity to speak of, and a yama-san of salaryman responsibilities to get through as a section chief, Otoboke manages to muddle through days, bringing grins to people's faces.

So is it time to nominate Otoboke Kachou for Father of the Year??

Sanzoku Ou: King of Bandits 3 of 13 by Sawada Hirofumi

Now grown-up, Nagato is appointed Masashige's right-hand man. His first mission: Go to Harima with friend Koyasha to facilitate some transaction.

What the emissary pair doesn't know is that Akuto from Harima, Enshin Akamatsu, is hunting them down.

That congenital star-shaped stigma on Nagato's chest, singling him out as one prophesied to overthrow imperial authority, marks Nagato as The Target as blatantly as D.Gray-man Allen's exorcist coat, doesn't it?

Summer Storm! 4 of 8 by Kobayashi Jin

We're at the halfway mark of the summer tempest. (Kobayashi Jin's time-skipping romance comedy ends at volume 8.)

Kanako and Yayoi likewise end up working in Hakobune, crowding up Yasaka's summer. Yayoi also searches for a partner to connect with her so that she, too, can leap through time.

Tokkyu! 13 of 20 by Kubo Mitsuro & Komori Yoichi

Kanbayashi covertly tries out the new equipment that caused Meguru's accident and sent his unconscious colleague to the hospital. But no matter how many times he puts the thing to test, it looks perfectly fine.

Yappari. Hyogo x Meguru da.

BTW, Sanada visits “dangerously beautiful” travel-advisoried Indonesia in the next tankou.

Red Haired Snow White 3, Toradora 1, Summer Storm! 2 (Elex Media 14 July 2010 manga)

Minimal post (sorta) until RL decides to cut me some slack.

赤髪の白雪姫 3

Akagami no Shirayukihime © Akizuki Sorata/Hakusensha (Serialized in LaLa DX)
Published in Indonesia as Red Haired Snow White by Elex Media Komputindo

Zen's big bro Izana tries to boot Shirayuki out of Clarines by inviting the definitely unwelcome prince Raji of Tanbarun, Shirayuki's spurned suitor, to the castle in Red Haired Snow White volume 3. (Pretty sure Prince among Princes Zen will “terrorize” Raji again; can't wait.)

Aside from the political intrigues in Akizuki Sorata's neo-faerie tale Akagami no Shirayukihime, here are the other highlights of this Elex release:

New Elex Titles

Three more manga series ex-June finally debut. Aside from Toradora starring superficially fearsome Takasu Ryuuji and definitely ferocious Aisaka Taiga (you've probably already met them in the anime), there's Tena on S String, the Manga Time Kirara Forward seinen adventure about Ordinary High School Student Kyosuke who gets into an accident and wakes up hearing music all around. (Elex Book Reviews likens Tena to Shakugan no Shana — prolly for its sudden servitude and tsundere tropes.) The third is Rockwell the Scarlet Knight, the story of the poor but earnest eponymous Rockwell, living by the chivalric code.

Series finales

Hikawa Kyouko's historical shoujo fantasyFairy-Tale-Motif Brocade—ends with Elex's release of volume 5 (after making us wait for more than a year). Protagonists Suzu and Shinkuro face even stronger enemies, while trying to make sense of their feelings.

The Otogimoyou Ayanishiki conclusion begs the question: The Otogimoyou Ayanishiki Futatabi sequel wa?

Mangazines

Two manga anthologies: the Indonesian Nakayoshi (#82) and Issue 68 of Shonen Star, the local Shonen Sunday.

This Naka highlights Toyama Ema's rabu triangle/blackmail-troped romance comedy XX Me! or Watashi ni xx Shinasai!, in which Akira wants to be Yukina's boyfriend, replacing Shigure, in the newest chapter.

Meanwhile, the latest ShoStar premieres Takkoku!!!タッコク!!! 」, the If you want to declare your love for somebody, play some ping-pong first!-premised shounen comedy by Fukuchi Tsubasa, creator of The Law of Ueki.

[Reissues]

Box Set Round Two for One Piece (volumes 1-10; 11-20; 21-30; and 31-40 redux), Eyeshield 21 (volumes 1-10 of 37) and Kitchen Princess (volumes 1-10 of 10). Each “value” set retails for IDR 160,000, which constitutes an increase of between 10% to 60% (depending on which series) from the first time these were bundled. (More on prices below.) Also, there's the six-pack compile of Doraemon cinemangafication, Paket Doraemon Movie (Jakarta), which reissues movies 1 through 3, i.e., The Records of Nobita Spaceblazer, Nobita's Legendary King of the Sun and Nobita Drifts in the Universe.

Some stats and price reminders

  • Excluding reissues, we have shoujo grabbing a 44% share VS shounen's 37%
  • Excluding mangazines, publisher share breaks down to Hakusensha: four titles, tied with Shogakukan, with Kodansha contributing two titles
  • All manga are priced at IDR 16,500 each, except the Doraemon Movie set (SRP: IDR 125,000) and Kumpulan Cerita Berwarna Doraemon 4 (IDR 29,800, from a previous IDR 28,800). Nakayoshi remains at IDR 27,000/volume, but Shonen Star increases its price to IDR 30,000.

Spiral: The Bonds of Reason 3, Pangeran Kacamata (Megane Ouji) 4 of 4, Summer Storm! 1 (Elex Media 19 May 2010 manga)

Edited because apparently Pangeran Kacamata (Megane Ouji) is only four volumes, and thus this release is the series finale

スパイラル 推理の絆 3

Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna © Shirodaira Kyo & Mizuno Eita/Square Enix
(First serialized in Shonen Gangan)
Published in Indonesia as Spiral: The Bonds of Reason by Elex Media Komputindo

Contains   [SPOILERS!] and much (TV) Trope Identification (Don't worry; I provide links where they're not self-explanatory.)

Eyes-sama~! *glomp* Fangirl lapse over the Bishie Badass Bookworm on the cover aside, Spiral: The Bonds of Reason 3 remains this Elex manga sked's leading DO WANT! — prolly for the no need for deduction reason that the Absurdly High Staked-clot, I mean, plot, is thickening:

Narumi Ayumu's investigation leads him to a teacher claiming to have the deets on the Blade Children, but before any file transfer can take place, the man is offed by Older Than She Looks Rio. It appears that Ayumu and Watson Hiyono are next in the Blade Child's sights.

Elex fumbled and didn't provide a synop, so an adapt of Yen Press' Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning vol.3 blurb it is. The English description adds: When her murderous plot backfires and Rio finds herself in the hospital, she challenges the visiting Ayumu to a life-and-death gamble, only to find herself face-to-face with Hiyono, who calls Rio's bet and raises her one!

メガネ王子 4

FINALES: Pangeran Kacamata (Megane Ouji) 4

Kak, Jadilah Pangeran Kacamataku! (Be my Glasses Prince!, the volume subtitle) could well be the sniveling wail, if not whiny demand of Megane Ouji heroine Sachiko, after she finds out that Not Blood Sib, Leads a Double Life Akihiko/Akira actually has an ex-girlfriend — one who is pretty and classy and whatever else Sachi is not.

Everything including the kitchen sink seems to be conspiring to make Sachi give up on her beloved four-eyed prince, doesn't it? My advice to the beleaguered megane fangirl: “ex-” is the operative word (actually, prefix) here. “Ex-”girlfriend. (I don't normally go around counseling fictional creations, but this particular protagonist is just so ridiculously unlucky (as per her creator Mizukami Wataru's design), and her four-eyed prince so much a frickin' tease that I couldn't help it.)

NEW TITLES

Summer Storm! 1 by Kobayashi Jin

Adapted to Anime, Crossdressing, Ghost heroine, Scooter, Time Travel, and World War II comprise Baka-Updates Manga's top user-voted categories for Summer Storm! (Natsu no Arashi!) — and the abecedarian laundry list does provide a pretty good (not to mention, intriguing) overview of the shounen manga from School Rumble creator Kobayashi Jin.

Here's how Elex blurbed the series that (as pointed out) was adapted into anime (Spring 2009 and Fall 2009 for the sequel):

Yasaka Hajime finds an old photograph of Arashiyama Sayoko. Arashi (for short) claims to have lived through the war 60 years ago, and the only hint that she's telling the truth lies in her ancient mode of dress. Skeptic Hajime who believes only in what science tells him tries to verify Arashi's story, and as the plot bunny coincidence would have it, meets the person who took the picture. So is Arashi a ghost? Or did a time slip occur?

Okay, so the Scooter and Crossdressing tags remain mysteries (I didn't watch the anime) compelling enough to make me want to check out volume 1.

The Moon & Lake by Ashihara Hinako

Like Ashihara Hinako's Butterfly Cloud, The Moon & Lake (Tsuki to Mizuumi) spans only one volume. Elex bills it a touching love story. The Moon & Lake follows Kazuna's quest to locate the woman her novelist grandfather wrote about in his unpublished roman à clef. The novel reveals her grandfather's love for a woman to whom he wasn't married. Despite her unease, Kazuna goes to see her grandfather's “lover.”

Shoujo slice of life romance drama, FTW.

(The previous issue had featured a Special Symphony/Kin Iro no Corda ~Tokubetsuhen~ interlude.) Hopefully we get more, more, MOAR! Tsukimori, Tsuchiura, and Shimizu (not to mention Aoi) hawt-ness in this next chapter.

The key highlight, however, is another double round (Stories 78-79) of fan favorite Alice Academy by Higuchi Tachibana:

Badass Adorable (in the Hana Hime arc) Mikan makes a new friend, Koizumi. Appearing to be a weakling, Koizumi keeps Alice powers under wraps and constantly tries to get close to Jerk with a Heart of Gold Natsume. A day before the sports festival, the Academy of Adventure is thrown into chaos, with stuff flying everywhere — ending up in Mikan's imprisonment with Koizumi.

Oh, please. If Mikan has to be stuck with anybody, that body oughta be Natsume! (Like what happened when Natsume x Mikan were “glued” together by Tsubasa's mocchi mocchi-adulterated mochi.)

The other installments to look out for are the 40-paged chapter 2 of Twinkle Stars (Hoshi wa Utau), Takaya Natsuki's latest addition to the HanaLaLa currents roster, and the final chapter (File 10) of Uno Ayumi's Darling (that came and now goes without me ever having read it).

Other regular Hana to Yume and LaLa goodies: Arakure: The Wild Ones by Fujiwara Kiyo (this issue: chapter 30) · Dragon's Fiancé (Ryuu no Hanawazurai) by Kusakawa Nari (Chapter 21) · Natsume Yujincho by Midorikawa Yuki (Chapter 4) · Ouran High School Host Club by Hatori Bisco (Chapter 56) · Skip Beat! by Nakamura Yoshiki (Act 101: Encounter!! A Dynamite Star) · Sugar Princess by Nakajo Hisaya (Chapter 10) · Vampire Knight by Hino Matsuri (28th Night: The Kuran Family) · V.B. Rose by Hidaka Banri (Chapter 50) · With My Brothers (Oniichan to Issho) by Tokeino Hari (Chapter 49).
