Also, HanaLaLa 53 (finally!)

Before I get to someone's 180 IQ —

The FBI and the Black Organization play tug of wag with Mizunashi Rena marking the center line in Detektif Conan 58. The shady group's not above swamping the hospital with suspicious packages and patients to keep the feds busy. Even with Conan and Akai lending their strength, can the good guys manage to protect Rena? [Additions from Wikipedia's summary]

For the latest in Conan serial installments, see Shonen Star 75, also shipping 10.27

Later in the same volume, the Shounen Tantei-dan assists Takagi in probing the murder of a stranger in a strange land.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle 17, this sked's DO WANT! runner-up (or any Elex manga not spotlighted Above the Cut), is blurbed after the release listing.

Finales: Busou Renkin and The Phantom of the Opera 3rd Murder

As Amagi Seimaru- & Sato Fumiya's Kindaichi Special Case: The Phantom of the Opera 3rd Murder wraps with volume 2 —

Murder claims lives at the remote Opera House for the third time. Before horrified witnesses, three theater group members fall prey to a killer with the perfect alibi. Can Kindaichi uncover the Phantom behind the murders before everyone exits, stage left?

Meanwhile, in Busou Renkin 10:

Tokiko vows to take down Papillon in lieu of Kazuki who once more wagers his life on protecting humanity from Victor's remorse. But a surprise awaits Tokiko and the other Alchemist Warriors at Papillon's sanctum.

[Additions from VIZ Media's Buso Renkin, Vol. 10 description]

The final Busou Renkin also contains the special Embalming -Corpse and Bride- AKA Embalming I, which belongs to Watsuki Nobuhiro's Embalming short story universe that explores the Frankensteinian idea of infusing life to the dead.

NEW ELEX TITLES: English School Wars, Pokonyan Pika-pika

Elex premieres dark horse (actually, “Rackat” or Raccoon/Cat) Pokonyan Pika-pika by Fujiko F. Fujio and promotes HanaLaLa graduate, English School Wars by Matsumoto Tomo, to tankou. Both are short series: the Pokonyan Pikkapika kodomo manga spans three volumes, while Eikaiwa School Wars ends in two volumes. This being my blog, you can be sure I reserved this spot for the latter Language Barrier, Foreigner, Gaijin, Student-Teacher Relationship, Age Gap, Enemies become lovers LaLa shoujo romance comedy.

English School Wars 1 of 2 by Matsumoto Tomo

Before her family moves to New York, Arisugawa Kiko has to master English and is thus forced to take English conversation classes to improve her fluency, or lack thereof. One of the almost xenophobic Kiko's teachers is Ish G Kilroy, a young instructor who has issues with Japanese high school girls.

Could Ish's joshikousei “dislike” possibly stem from his and Kiko's earlier squabble over the last can of mackerel in a 100 yen shop?

Whatever the reason, Kiko can't understand why the Yuuu aaa miiin (You are mean) Ish proves so popular with the other students.

To answer Kiko in two words: smexy megane.

Fave line comes from Practice 3: Don't wander around! Stay beside me! –Ish to Kiko

Elex also publishes Matsumoto Tomo-sensei's Beauty Honey (latest volume 2 of 3). The manga-ka's Beauty is the Beast series ended its Indonesian run June 2009.

MANGAZINES: HanaLaLa 53 and Shonen Star 75

To make up for the involuntary two-month hiatus, HanaLaLa 53/2010 returns not only with ZeroYukiKaname eyecandy on the cover, but also double your usual dosage of Alice Academy and Sugar Princess. Meanwhile, Shonen Star 75 has Inuyasha & Co. posing on its cover. (More deets below.)

HanaLaLa 53/2010: Vampire Knight ♡

Vampire Knight 31st Night: The Path to the Answer (which you'll only reach in volume 7 if you exclusively follow the tankou releases) sees Yuki's class gaining a transferee in the person of Kiriyu Ichiru, none other than Zero's vengeful twin. Why did Zero allow Ichiru's enrollment, when chances are, his younger brother remains on the revenge path? Not to mention that Ichiru's entry into Cross Academy was orchestrated by the Vampire Senate.

Meanwhile, Takuma discovers someone planning to depose Kaname has possessed Shiki.

Other highlights

Another double dose of Nakajo Hisaya's Sugar Princess (chapters 15 and 16) and Higuchi Tachibana's Alice Academy (Story 82-83), as well as a 49-paged Chapter 7 of Midorikawa Yuki's Natsume Yujincho all go someways toward mitigating the two-month HanaLaLa vacuum created by approval problems with the Japanese publisher. (Don't ask me which series was responsible for the logjam; just choose randomly from the above-mentioned or from the Hakusensha shoujo manga below.)

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle 16 (Elex Media)

Tsubasa © Clamp/Kodansha [First serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine]
Published in Indonesia by Elex Media Komputindo

Elex didn't preview two of the three manga in the post title, which leads me to the conclusion that Powers That Be got in on the skedding after Komikologi October went into production. Fortunately, other language synops fill in the oversight, so I will be borrowing those for Tsubasa 16 (this sked's Most Wanted) and Fairy Tail 8.

Truth and lies tangle in a world of sand in Clamp's Tsubasa 16: The world shakes in the fated chance encounter!! as Shinfo frees Other!Syaoran while Real!Syaoran fights a death match against Kamui to retrieve Sakura's feather. It's only a matter of time before the two Syaorans clash... [Adapted from Pika Édition's Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, tome 16 blurb translation and Chuang Yi's TSUBASA Reservoir Chronicle, Volume 16 summary]

Meanwhile Del Rey's Vol. 16: The Friendship Breaks! blurb has this to add: ...a tumultuous battle leaves one of the friends near death, while another becomes an enemy after a shocking act of betrayal.

Fairy Tail 8 of 23+ by Mashima Hiro

In keeping with the unexpected conspiracy bent, I presume this tankou release top-of-mind capitalizes on the Southeast Asian airing of the Fairy Tail anime (on Animax) and/or the upcoming October premiere of Season 2 in Japan, but that's just me. (Your Mileage May Vary.) In any case, Natsu takes on Phantom Lord magic guild's Gajeel in Fairy Tail 8. As both dragon slayers duke it out, Phantom Lord prepares a spell of destruction that, once cast, may reduce its rival wizarding guild to... not even rubble. Fairy Tail's fate rests in the hands of Natsu and his friends, but can their combined magic avert the guild's imminent annihilation? [Adapted from Del Rey's Fairy Tail, Vol. 8: Ultimate Duel synopsis and Pika Édition's Fairy Tail, tome 8 preview translation]

FINALES: Penguin Revolution and Kaiser Z

Two series end as a new month of manga begins: Penguin Revolution by Tsukuba Sakura and Kaiser Z by Uno Hiroshi. I will only blurb the seventh PenKaku up here; for the science-fiction-set-in-WWII saga-ender, scroll kudasai.

The “Double Casting” to which Peacock's director alluded apparently didn't refer to Ryo and Makoto. So who will be Ryo's thespian sparring partner? And what will happen to the Peacock agency and its artists after the director takes a gamble on a spectacular “Stairway to Dreams” performance, despite Oka Yoko's worsening condition?

Elex promises the final volume will answer all your PenKaku questions, though MY mileage varies, having read the conclusion in HanaLaLa. Plus, that's one hella ambitious burden to lay on the ±300gm volume 7. The only certainty is that this shoujo series wraps faithful to its Penguin Revolution metaphor, with nary a real penguin sighting, much less one waging a revolt. *groans at her own lameness*

NEW ELEX TITLES: Tsuba Kiyo - 28K4, Crayon Shinchan edu-manga

Two titles debut this Wednesday: Nakayoshi alumna Tsuba Kiyo - 28K4 by Hara Asumi and Crayon Shinchan: Mari Mengenal Serangga (Crayon Shinchan: Let's Get to Know Insects) by Usui Yoshito. (You'll have to wait longer for the premiere of licensed Shinchan.) As with the finales, I blurb only one newbie here, so you know what to do if you want to introduce yourself to arthropods.

Just as student council prexy Sakurai Seiji imagines himself a telepath, along comes Tsubaki Kiyoi with the verified ability to read minds. What brings her to the student council? She desires to become a member?!

And thus the legendary Strongest Student Council Tsubakiyo is born.

Student Council, Psychic Powers, Stoic Character are the top Baka-Updates user-voted tags for this short (only two volumes) series.

Hara Asumi-sensei was last seen with School x Fight, but s/he also created Teman (Tomodachi), Future is Ours, as well as illustrating the manga biography of Nakagawa Shouko.

The Elex Book Reviews editor recommends this edu-manga for kids to learn about insects, the class that includes more than a million described species and represent more than half of all known living organisms (so cites Wikipedia).

Butterflies and crickets (which tickles me as very Japanese) are among the nearby Insecta featured, but I doubt the non-fiction comic has Shinchan and pals making pets out of, say, Xestobium rufovillosum AKA death watch beetles.

The 216-paged, 14 x 21cm Crayon Shinchan - Mari Mengenal Serangga carries an IDR 25,800 (approx. USD 2.89) SRP.

Last June, Elex released Crayon Shinchan - Keajaiban Ilmu Pengetahuan (Crayon Shin-chan: The Marvels of Science) at the same IDR 25,800 price.
