In the latest Idol Shopping, m&c!'s “stepchild” manhwa (it shares its translator and editor with the speedier Female Wolf's Boy), SeRyun goes jjang and vows to protect Kang Ahul from Seo GaYoon — after learning of Ahul's love confession to the megane bishie/bully.

I had trouble choosing between the second Bullying, Student-Teacher Sayonara demo Aishiteru and third Childhood Friends Yukisaki ♥ Koisaki to feature Above The Cut. (Despite being similarly friends-troped, Satsuki Mikiko's 1/6 Ja~npu!, an ex-Cherry serial, wasn't even in the running, largely because the Goodbye but I Love You cover promises breathless romance, if not moar angst). How would you feel if the person you like suddenly sez she wants to break up with you? Do you start hating her or...?

Yutaka chooses the Or... alternative because breaking up out of the blue doesn't make sense. Sure, he was the one who proposed to Mariya, and even if that was originally because she helped him out of an entrance exams pinch, lately, they'd been getting closer.

So, really, what gives with her I like someone else bit??

Mini-review
Goodbye but I Love You compiles four stories, the first two: Goodbye but I Love You ~ Yutaka's Side and Goodbye but I Love You ~ Mariya's Side telling of Yutaka and Mariya's It's complicated relationship from their respective viewpoints. I was attracted to this manga because its twin POV title christeners evoke Fujiwara Yoshiko's I Hate You But I Love You, up to and including the one-third Big Misunderstanding. So if you lurved the former, you prolly will enjoy the latter. Of Mariya and Yutaka's versions, I prefer Yutaka's Side. (Also favorite Yuuya's take over Mao's in I Hate You But I Love You.)

If I rate IHYBILY - Hatori (Yuuya)'s Version a 9 to 10 of 10, then GBILY ~ Yutaka's Side gets a 7. Mao's IHYBILY was around 7.75-8.25; in comparison, GBILY ~ Mariya's Side gets a 5 (both ratings dropped because of that 30-40% Big Mis). In terms of cover art though, I rate GBILY's a 9 of 10, while IHYBILY's scores a 7.75.

The remaining GBILY stories, 1% Miracle, the Student-Teacher story I would've rated 5 of 10 (and 3 of that was for the Biseinen Sensei's chara design), had it not been for the last five pages which bumped the eventual grade up to 6.25, and Love Me Sweet and Cold, a classic shoujo set-up proficiently executed thereby obtaining it a 6 of 10 for story and a 7 of 10 for the characterization.

So all in all, I deem Goodbye but I Love You a competent take on shoujo conventions and recommend it as a Rent if you're not that convinced to Buy.

Yagami Rina-sensei also created the vampire-troped Bloody Kiss, ongoing serialization in Sho-Comi; the shoujo smut Kareshi Toshishitakei; and the bishounen-strong Kimi o Omou Toki (the latter two are standalones).

MANGAZINES: Cherry 49/2010

Color of Sky, Color of Love lands the Cherry 49 cover. Apparently, Ichikawa Show's reverse harem Sorairo Koiiro 「空色恋色」 debuted when I wasn't looking because Episode 2 is on page 31 of the latest Indonesian Sho-Comi / ChuChu / Ciao / Flower Comics mangazine. Color of Sky, Color of Love's heroine Sora is the only girl in a science class comprising all boys, a predicament similar to Ah, dear Banchou!'s Souka.

Ichikawa Show-sensei is also the manga-ka of Let's Go Home—one of my all-time fave recurrent reread manga (with a megane bishie hero)—so I will be looking out for the eventual tankou release of Color of Sky, Color of Love (that reportedly includes the otaku-troped Sore demo Yappari Kimi ga Suki oneshot).

But I'm jumping the gun. Here are the rest of Cherry's ongoing Shogakukan serials (with a Beauty Pop extra Hysteric Heart slipped in on page 290 now that Stage 2 has wrapped): Love ♥ Deco by Jinna Mai (this issue: Episode 4); My Lovely Class Leader by Nishimura Tomoko (Episode 24); The Ring of God by Obara Shou (Episode 2); Dawn Aria by Akaishi Michiyo (Episode 26; volume 7 also streets on the 1st); and 7 Centi! by Nanajima Kana (Memory 6).

It seems that Kiss & Harmony (likely Takamiya Satoru's Koyoi Oto Furu Sora no Shita romance, starring Miyabi who has lost her voice and Yue who tries to bring her back to the world of sound) also premiered unbeknownst to me because its Lesson 2 can be found on page 138. Two more oneshots complete Cherry 49: Princess Yuki's Birth (page 234) and The Prince and The Poor (page 330), the latter bearing the same title as komikus Lily Zhai's romance comedy The Prince and The Poor, a KOLONI local comic. (Could they be one and same?)

Okay, so m&c!'s back cover blurb is a bit minimal. So let me excerpt Baka-Updates Manga's description because it's gots the juicy Love Triangle deets:

Ai's class is taking an educational trip to Paris! She's never been before, so she thinks this might be a great chance for an exciting and romantic adventure! Unfortunately, Ai's boyfriend Tsukasa is pretty serious; they've been together for a while and haven't even kissed yet! You prolly already know of Akimoto Nami-sensei from the Nakayoshi manga Urukyuu (Ultra Cute) but she later graduated to risqué-er shoujo romances like Dangerous Strawberry Boy and Tokyo Sex, the latter serialized in Dessert.

School Baby by Shibano Yuka

Keep her away from kyuuketsuki, blood-phobic doctor's daughter Komachi fails to get into her dream high school and is forced to enroll at her second choice, “Special Course.” There she meets weirdos a-plenty, including star sprinter Oosaki Hiro.

Aside from revealing that Hiro has his eye on her, Midnight Scans (excerpted by Baka-Updates Manga) specifies the kind of people Komachi meets in sports and arts Special Course, Macho with dreadlocks, bearded lolita, among them.

Shibano Yuka-sensei is (more or less) a regular in the release schedules, with manga coming out almost every quarter: 1/3 Romantica (30 June), March Our Hearts Together (10 March) and My Summer Love (21 October 2009). But I'm pretty sure m&c! has yet to license the one-volume music-troped Diamond Beat.

Welcome to Rakuan-Inn by Minami Sachi

You can feel a person's warmth not just from body temperature, but also from the ears, the eyes, the heart.

This Hitachi and Shinonome have proven in Rakuan, the sanctuary of souls yearning to become whole.

So, if I didn't mistake teh Japanese blurb, Rakuan-Inn is some sort of temple, a sorta halfway house for ghosts with regrets.

I like Minami Sachi-sensei's series (Colorful Joker, Mebius Union); her (his?) standalones (Little Beans in Love), not so much. But since Welcome to Rakuan-Inn reminds me of Ghost Only, I'll probably check it out of the rental library.

An email virus sent from “DAISY” spreads throughout the school, prompting Kurosaki to try to smoke out the fake hacker. Before Kurosaki can uncover the pretender's identity, he is knocked out when he saves Teru from a shadowy threat too close to lethal for comfort.

The investigation stalled and Kurosaki injured, Teru keeps vigil at the hospital where he is admitted. Realizing just how much Kurosaki means to her, especially now that he has sacrificed himself ... yada yada yada.

The important thing in volume 5 of Motomi Kyousuke's Electric Daisy is: while they are alone in his hospital room, They. Kiss!

Rasetsu's Flower 6 of 8+ by Shiomi Chika

Meanwhile, I do hope there's no such kiss (again) between Hyuga Rasetsu and Iwatsuki Kuryuu, the kotodama-tsukai in Shiomi Chika's Rasetsu's Flower (Rasetsu no Hana). Volume 6 supposedly delves into Kuryuu's past and I could care less. I ship YakouRasetsu all the way, baybeh! (Hoshino Yakou is the water exorcist ex-the prequel Yurara's Moon.)

Dawn Aria 3 of 9+ by Akaishi Michiyo

In m&c!'s latest tankou of Dawn Aria (Akaishi Michiyo's Cherry-serialized josei title), Aria conceals her worries about her left hand from Natsuo and Shirayuki-sensei, but Natsuo matches Aria's secretiveness and eavesdrops on her piano playing. Shirayuki-sensei later uncovers what Aria is hiding and marches her off to a doctor. While there, Sensei receives news of his wife's death.

m&c! released an Akaishi Michiyo-sensei omnibus, The Best Selection of Akaishi Michiyo, last 2 June.

NEW M&C! TITLES: Confirmation as promised

Yes, Shiiba Nana's Gorgeous Twins is Gokujou Twins, the title alluding to the dupe pair who caused Sara's trauma and who have now returned, more gor-jus! than ever, to make her life even more miserable (or so she thinks). Shiiba Nana's other m&c!-released shoujo manga standalones include Prince Romantica and The Underground Kids.

Chiba Kozue's Love Letter is Hidarite no Love Letter, in which Nishino and Minami Taiga exchange left hand romantic scribbles, the “love letters” of the title. Chiba Kozue is the manga-ka of 24 Colors or 24 Colors - Hatsukoi no Palette and Let's Meet at School Tonight (Yoru no Gakkou e Oide Yo!).

It turns out Wao Akira's Sayaka's Special Attack, Big Victory! is Tokkou Sayaka Bucchigiri, which finds Sayaka on a fund-raising drive to prevent her school from closing, meeting a singer slash savior who offers to help her raise money if she becomes his girlfriend. (Even though Sayaka already has Aoi.)

Other Sayaka... titles include prequels Yankee Girl (Tokkou Sayaka Yoroshiku) and Sayaka, I Love You! (Tokkou Sayaka ☆ I Love You) that relate the progress of Sayaka and Aoi's romance.

(I don't think that there was any doubt Welcome to Lovers Café Marina by Kitamura Yuuka could have been anything other than Lovers Café Marina ni Youkoso, set in a café that holds all sorts events for couples.)

Finally, there are the first two volumes of Foot 2 Rue: Street Soccer bande dessinée/BDs (Franco-Belgian comics that m&c! calls AMERO comics and Level Comics, ROMICs), which intensify the current soccer mania.
